A Cuban Celebration!
With all the beautiful sunshine-y weather that has been going on lately where I live, I decided to kick off my Labor Day weekend by heading to one of my absolute favorite Cuban coffee shops (El Diablo Coffee in Seattle) for some Cuban toast. Being surrounded by a myriad of creative and colorful murals while sipping some incredible café con leche, I started thinking about how fun it would be to wind down the summer with a Cuban-themed backyard celebration!
Cuban art, food, music, and culture is all characterized by bold colors, rhythms, and flavors, and in my mind, pairing those flavors and colors with the bright sunshine and a good group of friends is a fantastic way to spend the end of a warm summer day. I headed off to Artfire’s Pinterest page as a starting point for potential decorations and recipes, and here’s some of what I found!
I’d seen this pop up on Artfire’s Facebook page a while ago, and sure enough, it was one of the first pins on their Recipes/Food board! Watermelon is such a summer-y fruit to begin with, and just look at the colors going on there! This would be the perfect way to serve up a colorful fruit punch to your guests, and I’m sure no one would mind a tot of rum or two thrown in for good measure. You can learn how to make your own watermelon keg here, and if you really want to go all-out when it comes to serving your drinks, I’d recommend a good martini glass with one of these awesome tropical flower wine charms by Artfire seller prism7art.
I would highly recommend not searching for “Cuban sandwich” on Pinterest unless you’re prepared to start drooling at your computer, because wow do the search results look tasty. Cuban sandwiches are an exceptionally tasty adaptation of the traditional ham and cheese sandwich, and I think they’d make an awesome entrée for the guests of your Cuban party. Check out these links from Three Guys From Miami, Food Network star Tyler Florence, and Allrecipes.com for a few of my favorite recipes!
When it comes to decorating for a Cuban party, the more colorful the better! Here are a couple easy DIY decoration ideas I found on Artfire’s Must Make Tutorials Pinterest board that I thought would be fantastic little touches to add to your party:
Zig-Zag Accordion Streamers
I love how easy these streamers are to make, and if they were hung around the outsides of your tables, I think they’d add a really lovely splash of color to your set-up!
How cool are these Epsom Salt Luminaries! These would be such a neat way to light up your tables as the sun goes down on you and your party guests, and the tutorial is super easy to understand. With these luminaries, those streamers, and some Cuban guitar music on a playlist, you’ll be good to go in no time.
These are just a few ideas to get you started on your own Cuban celebration! If you have any more ideas you’d like to share with the Nosh community, let us know in the comments!
