A Dose of Wanderlust

China

Have you ever had the urge to just drop whatever it is you’re doing (work, school, making lunches for the kids, anything and everything), and buy a plane ticket somewhere exotic and strange? The urge to get up and go somewhere you’ve never been before is summed up quite well in the term “wanderlust” – the lust for travel and adventure.

Wanderlust strikes us all from time to time, and especially in the gloomier months of the year, it’s hard to resist popping open Travelocity or Expedia to see what escapes they’re currently offering. I know I’ve certainly felt it pretty strongly lately, so I decided to round up some pictures of places far and near to share with you all – places that are beautiful, haunting, exciting, and everything a sufferer of wanderlust needs to get through their Friday!

Ban Gioc Waterfalls

China

This stunning image of the Ban Gioc waterfalls on the border between Vietnam and China would make even the most ardent homebody want to rent a raft and row out to the base of the falls for an afternoon on the water.

Potala Palace, Tibet

Potala Palace

The magnificent Potala Palace is located in Tibet, and served as the chief residence of the Dalai Lama until 1959. Thirteen stories of buildings soar over 1,000 feet above the valley floor below, and the palace boasts over 1,000 rooms, 10,000 shrines, and about 200,000 statues within its walls. Seeing this come looming out the mist would certainly be shiver-inducing!

Manchac Swamp, Louisiana

Manchac Swamp

Normally when you think of traveling, a swamp isn’t exactly the first destination to spring to mind, but perhaps this eerie photo of the Manchac Swamp of Louisiana may make you reconsider! I can’t quite put my finger on what it is about this photograph that is so intriguing, but it does remind me a little of a certain swamp in a certain famous movie trilogy…doubt any Jedi masters would be wandering around here, but you never know!

Saxony Sunrise

Sunrise

This Saxony sunrise conjures up images of a world before we arrived – the sheer beauty of the rolling hills, craggy peaks, and forested mountainsides is enough to make me want to pack up my tent and head out for a week or two (or ten) of camping.

Hong Kong Suburb

Hong Kong

Not all wanderlust is inspired by the beauty of nature! Whenever I see pictures like this of Hong Kong suburbs, I feel like I’ve been dropped in the middle of a good cyberpunk novel. The juxtaposition of old and new in Hong Kong is alluring for city-lovers the world over, and it is most definitely a city that comes alive at night.

Border of Sweden and Norway

Norway

This intrepid snowmobiler is preparing to ride the border between Sweden and Norway, and with the winter months (and winter sports season) upon us, an adventure like this looks like a total blast. I wonder if that hill is steep enough for a sled…

Coast of New Zealand

New Zealand

New Zealand is perhaps most famous for the stunning inland scenery displayed in the LOTR trilogy, but its coasts deserve just as much attention as its rolling grassy hills and craggy mountain passes. There’s nothing quite like being near a beach during a storm, and this shot of New Zealand’s coastal wildness stirs the wanderlust something fierce.

Hope you all enjoyed these beautiful pictures, and I especially hope they help inspire some future travel ideas!
