Fans of Middle Earth rejoice! Last night heralded the premiere of the long-awaited first installment of The Hobbit trilogy in Wellington, New Zealand, and what better way to celebrate the release of the film than to do what hobbits (and dwarves) do best? Feast!
In the spirit of this childhood favorite finally making its way to the silver screen, I decided to round up some recipes straight from the hobbit’s hole to share with you all!
Biscuits are a very necessary side to any hobbit feast, especially with some fresh butter and a drizzle of honey straight from the hive. This simple recipe will make sure your guests are drooling in anticipation after they catch a whiff of these while they’re baking!
Elven Lembas Bread
There are many lembas bread recipes to choose from on the internet, but I like this one in particular, mostly because it calls kumquats “fruits of the Mallorn tree”. If you really want to go all-out, you could create your own Mallorn leaf wrappers for each piece of the bread and set them by each guest’s place to help start them on their culinary adventure!
Hobbits’ Favorite Stuffed Mushrooms
Hobbits love no food more than they love mushrooms, and this amazing stuffed mushroom recipe will satisfy even the most ardent cravings for this delectable fungus. Bacon, onion, and sharp cheddar cheese are among the stuffing ingredients, so you’re going to want to make sure you make a double batch, since they’ll likely steal the show.
Dwalin’s Deadly Carrot Soup
“Renowned as a great Warrior, Dwalin speaks his mind plainly and is not one to suffer fools lightly,” according to a release from the Warner Brothers studio, which makes this robust carrot soup an excellent recipe fit for this stoic and loyal dwarf. The chili flakes add a hint of spice to the soup, and if you really want to be adventurous, why not follow the suggested tip and add a chopped red chili pepper?
Dúnedain Hunter’s Stew
This hearty stew/pasta dish would serve an entire troop of hungry rangers, and it incorporates a whole festival of rustic fall veggies in a delicious tomato-based sauce. Be warned, this particular recipe makes a LOT of food, but you can always adjust the recipe pretty easily to accommodate a more hobbit-sized set of appetites.
Balin’s Spiced Beef
This spiced beef roast will take care of any lingering hunger pangs at the dinner table when the main courses are rolled out. Because its flavor relies on its marinade, make sure you give it the full twelve hour soak before putting it in the oven to roast!
Goldberry is one of the more obscure LOTR characters, but being the wife of Tom Bombadil (“Master of wood, water and hill”), it’s only fitting that her dish at this feast be a summery, lighthearted berry pie!
Bombur’s Vanishing Cobbler
I honestly can’t think of a better way to round out a Middle Earth feast with a berry pie accompanied by this berry cobbler. Oats, brown sugar, orange juice and zest, fresh berries…what more could a hobbit ask for?
