Great Lights: Ingo Maurer

By Jennifer Dian

A great art display or standout photograph is all dependent on the lighting. What about the lighting its self? At Ingo Maurer the lighting is the art.

Ingo got his start in 1965 when he was commissioned to create his first lamp.

By 1968 he’s already taken on his first 3 full time employees and began garnering press.

In 1979 he designed the “Thomas Alva Edison” in celebration of the 100 year anniversary of the light bulb.

His brand now supports a staff of more than 40 in two studios, New York and Milan. The entire design team has an obsession with lighting evident in the unique designs.

Zufall Ceiling is reminiscent of a beautiful skirt floating in the wind.

This flat desk lamp is an amazing concept, taking the dimension out of the design makes it feel new.  In 1999 Ingo Maurer and his team began experimenting with LED lighting.

Since then they have continued to turn out surprisingly fresh designs.

When the New York studio opened in February, 1999, Ingo Maurer was quoted, “We want to add our share of light to this magic metropolis.” They have done that well!

Do we have any ArtFire Artisans creating beautiful lighting solutions? Let’s do an article about it!
