No-sew? No problem!
When it comes to crafting, I’m pretty hopeless when it comes to anything involving a needle and thread that’s more complicated than small hole repairs or sewing a button onto a piece of clothing. I have a good friend who is quite the seamstress, but her attempts to teach me are usually met with either blank stares or me accidentally breaking her sewing machine somehow, so over time I’ve just accepted that this isn’t my crafting destiny.
Far from letting this get me down, though, I viewed it as a challenge to find cool crafts that at first glance look like they’d require sewing, but that can be done with skills just as basic as mine! I managed to round up six no-sew crafting DIYs that I’m pretty excited to get started on for some holiday gifts, and I thought I’d share them with you guys!
Fleece Tie Blanket
I have roughly half a dozen of these cozy fleece tie blankets in various rooms of my house, and they couldn’t be easier to make! They aren’t very time intensive – I can make an entire blanket from start to finish in one evening – and they make for really awesome birthday/holiday gifts! My mom actually makes these on a regular basis and gives them away to charity because she’s awesome like that, and they are always very welcomed.
The only thing I’d make sure to add to this awesome tutorial by Creative Jewish Mom is to make sure you get pieces of fleece that are plenty big. I’ve got a couple that wound up being a wee bit smaller than I would have liked because I didn’t take how cutting the edges would shorten the blanket into account first.
Market Tote Bag
I’m really digging this ultra-suede market tote bag from marthastewart.com, and all you’ll need to make it are some scissors, some masking tape, a print-out of the templates provided in the tutorial, and an exacto knife! I love hitting up farmers markets and the produce stands in my home city of Seattle’s famous Pike Place Market, and I’m excited to be able to bring this along (I made one in blue) on my next visit!
Suede No-Sew Skirt
In another great ultra-suede tutorial from marthastewart.com, the very first line makes me think this is something I could easily do, since I’m pretty much a rock star at buttons. And how cute is this skirt? I could easily see this becoming a staple of my fall wardrobe, and the one-button closure is very chic.
Got too many t-shirts lying around the house? This could be a great way to recycle them! This awesome t-shirt scarf comes to us from Doughmesstic, and I’m already scheming as to how I can get my roommates to contribute to my T-Shirt Scarf Fund…
Duct Tape Zipper Pouch
This cool little duct tape zipper pouch by Instructables user scoochmaroo might seem difficult to make without sewing, but it’s actually pretty straightforward and simple! This 7-step tutorial requires nothing more complicated than a stapler, duct tape, scissors, and a little patience, and I could think of a thousand things this could be used to hold (most of which are floating around in my purse somewhere).
I’ll hopefully be able to post up the results of some of my no-sew craft attempts soon, but in the meantime, let us know what your favorite no-sew projects are!
