The Shoe That Bloomed

By Jennifer Diana
We all know that shoes break down over time.  They wear from use and abuse.  But what if your shoe would actually biodegrade?  Oat Shoes asked that question and decided it was a concept worth exploring.  So much so, that they’ve created a line of biodegradable shoes.  Currently only available in Europe, these shoes are getting a lot of attention.

But wait, someone decided biodegradable just wasn’t interesting enough.  Now these shoes can literally sprout flowers.

When you are done wearing your shoe, bury your sneakers in the yard.  Water regularly and watch as flowers grow.

Shoes that grow flowers; I don’t think it can get any more organic than that!  Don’t worry, Oat Shoes says these won’t break apart in the rain.  The flowers seeds are enclosed in the tongue of the shoe along with planting instructions.  The placement allows flowers to sprout within days of planting.  The entire shoe will break down in approximately 6 months.

They are currently available in these four styles and colors.  The designs are fairly gender neutral and two come in men’s and women’s sizes.  Can’t wait to see what they come up with next.  I’d like to see a flip-flop version, myself. Hopefully they will start shipping Internationally.

  1. That is an amazing concept for biodegradable recycling. Love it! The shoes look good too! I like the tree pattern on the bottom too.

I really love this idea. I wish more manufacturers would consider this. I know that if you pose the issue with factories in China, they will move Heaven and Earth to make it so. But only after they say it’s impossible :)

Jacqueline, The brick and mortar store list for Oatshoes is http://www.oatshoes.com/stores/. Commenting rules only allow one link so to shop online, just substitute /shop/ for /stores/ to shop online.
