Art and Soul: Vivika Hansen DeNegre’s Prayer Flags

By Marge E

Many religious people light candles or incense, with the belief that the smoke sends their prayers upwards towards the heavens.  In Buddhist tradition, colorful flags are strung in the air, and when the breeze blows the flags, the prayers are released, and rise up to the gods.

Fabric and fiber artist Vivika Hansen DeNegre has taken this spiritual inspiration into her studio. Recently, she began a “Prayer Flag Project”.  She is creating daily prayer flags to honor the people and milestones in her life.  Her flags are personal expressions of gratitude, hopes, and dreams for family, friends, and the world around her.

The Prayer Flag Project has “caught on” in the fiber art world.  Many artists are now creating their own personal prayer flags, and sending pictures to Ms. DeNegre.

The flags measure about 5”x7”, and have a hanging sleeve attached to the back.  Most of these little flags are heavy with embellishments and handwork.  Most are fabric, stitched in the quilting genre, some are crafted as collage, others are paper.  Yet, no matter how they are created, the intent of the artist shines through!  They are truly little pieces of “art and soul”.

Anyone have any ideas for a prayer flag of their own?
