This tutorial teaches you step by step how to create a basic hinged cage, with or without beaded embellishments. This is a wonderfully versatile design to hold a favorite stone, maybe a love note, or a treasured trinket. Once it is on a chain, it is virtually impossible to come open by accident. As a bonus this tutorial also includes 2 COMPLETE step by step variations including a crossed wire and locket style cage. The owner of a local bead shop showed me the mechanics of the hinge close to 15 years ago. A very dear friend of mine, Master Wire Worker Ed Sinclair, created a published one in 1994. He has generously given me permission to share my versions of the basic cage and a crossed wire technique that he developed years ago. This is an advanced level tutorial - it assumes you are familiar with basic wire techniques and improvising when needed. It is 28 pages with 67 steps and over 100 crisp, clear photographs. The file size is 2.27MB. Dont be intimidated by the length and number of steps - This tutorial covers 3 FULLY illustrated pieces. While this is an advanced level tutorial, intermediate wire workers with a solid foundation of basic wire wrapping skills can, with patience, complete this design. The stone itself is 23mm long x 9mm wide, and wire wrapped in a wide style band to accent the stone's shape, and creates a wonderful sexy 'index finger ring'. The ring is a size 7 1/4, and while I cannot duplicate this ring exactly. it is possible to create something similar in another size. If you've looked at this piece before, you'll notice it's not listed as a Mystery Stone anymore, a wonderful member of the promessageboard - Evolutions in Stone - identified it for me - am so excited - if you're interested in additional info on this wonderful stone - http://mysticmerchant.com/cacoxinite/ The stone has deep hues of brown and purple and the occlusions are irredescent gold. I wrapped it sideways, because the occlusions form to look like tiny castles in the distance. The setting is very wide ( 2 stands of sterling silver pattern wire and 8 14k gf wires at a total width of 18mm) to offset the size of the stone. The stone is a 32mm by 24mm faceted oval, and the whole pendant measures 1 3/4" from the top of the bail and 1 1/4" wide. The bail is also large to accomodate even the chunkiest of chains. The pendant is wire wrapped in sterling silver, totally unique from my other pieces..... Not only did I start with the bail, and work down, but the wire ends are hidden at the bottom of the piece, something tricky to do in wire wrapping. This was a very time consuming piece, because I'm so picky about balance.... I actually wrapped the stone 3 times before I was happy with the results, squares and rectangles scream if they're not perfect.... :) The necklace is matching Rhodocrosite chips, and sterling silver Bali beads, strung on '39-strand' Beadalon wire, double crimped with SS crimp beads for extra strength, and finished with a pretty, large, barrel shape, sterling silver, magnet clasp (strong enough to accommodate the weight of this piece without constantly coming undone). The necklace portion of this piece, measures 16 1/2". The pendant is just over 2 1/4" long from the top of the bail, and just over 3/4" wide at the widest point. This is a gorgeous set, that will work equally well dressed up for the evening, or dressed down in your favorite jeans outfit. it is MOST definitely one of a kind, and can never be duplicated.....
