What is the difference between Labradorite and Spectrolite?

Fundamentaly, nothing. Technically this type of feldspar is characterized as being a labradorescent sodium rich plagioclase feldspar known as the mineral labradorite.

Once upon a time Labradorite was characterized as Labradorite from the Labrador region of Canada and Spectrolite was characterized as Labradorite from Finland. The Finns utilize Spectrolite as a trade name associated with material mined in their region of the world. Labradorite has since been found in many regions of the world, each with its own particular body color and cutting characteristics.

In modern world markets though, Labradorite has come to be associated with material that is massive or monochrome and of inconsistant orientation, more suited for carving or making spheres from. Spectrolite is a term better applied to the more solid, and colorful forms of Labradorite regardless of where the material is actually mined. Spectrolites are characterized by sheets of intense color(s) and often find applications in jewelry and intarsia.

All other man made opalescent materials are considered to be simulations or simulants of opal. They are forms of glass or contain resins and bear no resemblance to natural opal in its structure or composition.

Nice pendant stone with good orientation and color.

Very bright green on black Gilson Opal.

Gilson opal is a synthetic version of opal. Unlike other opal substitutes, Gilson opal has a similar structure to opal and no artificial additives. The prime differences art that Gilson Created Opal contains vertually no water and is far more stable than natural opal.

All other man made opalescent materials are considered to be simulations or simulants of opal. They are forms of glass or contain resins and bear no resemblance to natural opal in its structure or composition.

Collector's stone, jewelry stone; your choice.

This is precious Australian opal from the Mintabie fields, that exhibits two distinct forms. One portion of this opal has bands of green fire and black opal, while another portion exhibits grey opal with red, yellow, and green fire.

This stone shows best with the orientation in the main image. The fire is most brilliant in direct sunlight, a fact that is notoriously difficult to catch with photography.

This is a stone you will have to see in person to truly appreciate.

As with all of my stones the sides are beveled and the bottom edge is trimmed to allow for bezel setting.

This matrix opal is from Andamooka, Australia and exhibits some beautiful green fire.

Matrix opal is a material where small amounts of precious opal is diseminated thoughout a porous host rock.

Normally the fire can not be seen or can be seen poorly in the natural state.

Matrix opal is cooked in alternating baths of sugar and acid solutions with a final bath of baking soda to neutralize the acid. The acid breaks down the sugar into its carbon components creating a dark base color. This allows the bright colors of the opal to be seen.

Matrix opal can be brittle so care should be used when setting the stone.

A paraffin polish is used to seal the stone and increase luster.
