Matrix opal is a material where small amounts of precious opal is diseminated thoughout a porous host rock. Normally the fire can not be seen or can be seen poorly in the natural state. Matrix opal is cooked in alternating baths of sugar and acid solutions with a final bath of baking soda to neutralize the acid. The acid breaks down the sugar into its carbon components creating a dark base color. This allows the bright colors of the opal to be seen. Matrix opal can be brittle so care should be used when setting the stone.
