Many of us are more than ready to put 2020 behind us. That being said, we have lived through a time that will surely be recorded in the history books. Why not put together your own family history lesson in a DIY time capsule?
The first thing you will need to do is to select your capsule. Are you going to bury your time capsule in the backyard and then dig it up in several years? If so, an ammo box or metal water bottle might be what you are looking for. Or maybe you want to be able to look back often, so a scrapbook might be more your style. Some other ideas are: metal/plastic lunch box, shoebox, wooden crate, or even a shadow box.
Now the fun part, the memories you are going to put inside. First and foremost should be a family photo. Many of us hopped on the “porch picture” bandwagon and have one of these lying around that would be perfect. For those who did not hear about this, porch pictures were taken to showcase your life during Covid. Some people kept it simple and took traditional family photos. Others, like my family, took one using “props” to represent all the things that kept us busy during Covid (craft supplies, cooking supplies, tools, bikes, …) If you don’t have a porch picture, that’s fine, but you definitely want to add a recent picture of everyone in your household.
Other things you may want to include in your time capsule are: a flash drive with photos or videos of your time during Coronavirus, any writing or drawing (if you haven’t done so, write a short journal entry describing how things changed during 2020- remote learning, “social distancing”, toilet paper shortage, masks, travel ban, stay at home orders,…), a list of projects you took on during quarantine, a list of new hobbies, magazines or newspaper clippings that showcase how things changed both politically and socially, recipes you tried and loved, anything else you can think of that will help you remember what made 2020 what it was to you and your family.
If you are looking for a simpler, but just as meaningful time capsule for your kids, here is a packet that you can print and use: My 2020 Covid-19 Time Capsule.
Again, many of us are ready to put this year behind us, but we are living through a historic event that we will someday want to share with our loved ones. This project may be one that could becomes a family treasure.
