Mother-of-pearl blister pearl, sterling silver, and freshwater pearl necklace by Glowfly
I’m Jennifer, the sole owner and designer at Glowfly Designs. I’m a native San Diegan, which means that rain is a rare treat for me. The desire to create is inextricable from my personality. I am hard-wired that way and one could even call it a compulsion. I make jewelry. Mostly metal-smithing, beading, and wire-wrap…for now. What I love about jewelry as an artistic medium is that I could spend my entire life learning new techniques without mastering a single one.
“Jewelry is my dark, enchanted forest and I’m always ready to explore.”
For a lot of this, I learn by doing, or reverse-engineering (that is, looking at what other people have done, speculating on how they did it and developing a way to do it myself). I have also taken classes and attended workshops with some fabulous local mentors. This is a great way to be introduced to a technique I’ve never thought existed. Really, jewelry is my dark, enchanted forest and I’m always ready to explore.

Jennifer Making a Sweet Hummingbird Necklace
I multi-task. A lot. Currently, I’m switching between writing this, paying bills online, and making sterling silver settings for some sea shells. If I weren’t writing this, I’d be watching a bad horror movie, working on my novel (no, it won’t be America’s Greatest Novel), or viewing some TV show too embarrassing to admit I watch, it’s easy to be working while these are going on.
I work full time when I am not creating jewelry or working on some other artistic pursuit. Or I am out hiking, or surfing or enjoying San Diego. Or playing with birds. I really like birdies. I work full time as an engineer, so I bring home my engineering skills to jewelry design and send some creativity back the other way.
“I love custom orders because they really challenge my abilities and force me to grow, which keeps the work exciting. “
I find that running my own business has expanded my horizon of experience a lot. Foremost, it has taught me and is teaching me how to work with people. It can be somewhat delicate to see through someone else’s vision for a piece and still imbue it with my own Odd-Jen style. Truthfully, I love custom orders because they really challenge my abilities and force me to grow, which keeps the work exciting.

My dream is to be creating jewelry full-time. I’d love to be running a studio and shop together. My vision is a space where artists of a few disciplines can come together to share their techniques, experiences, and perspectives, but also for budding artists to become introduced and mentored in selling their work, if they so desire. Something like the Artfire community, but local and in-person.
“I’ve found ArtFire to be a great place to start building a customer base and a foundation for success.”
I’ve found Artfire to be a great place to start building a customer base and a foundation for success. Everyone I’ve interacted with in the community is so genuine and supportive and I look forward to growing further with it.
