Charcuterie Boards may be the biggest trend in hosting history. But what exactly are they and how do you make them? Let ArtFire explain!
Charcuterie (shaar koo tr ee) is the art of stacking, arranging, and coordinating different foods onto a serving tray that makes the combinations not only yummy, but beautiful. The trick is to pair items of different colors, shapes, and textures that will taste good as well as be pleasing to the eye. Traditional boards are arranged with meats, cheeses, fruits, and nuts. But today’s hosts and hostesses have upped the game and you can find Charcuterie Boards with just about anything.
Some of our favorite unique boards are:
Taco Board- soft tortillas, crispy taco shells, grilled meats, salsa, guacamole, shredded lettuce, shredded cheese, diced tomatoes, cilantro, lime wedges.
Breakfast Board- piles of french toast, pancakes, waffles, hard boiled eggs, bacon, sausage, fresh fruit, roast, jams, jellies, syrups.
Salad Board- wedges of iceberg lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, mandarin oranges, dried cranberries, golden raisins, apples, candied walnuts, thin apple slices, avocado, dressings.
Snack Board- cucumbers slices, baby carrots, bell peppers slices, broccoli florets, cauliflower florets, mushrooms, ranch dressing, olives, salami, cheese cubes, pretzels, crackers.
Sandwich Board- small hoagie rolls, assorted meats, assorted cheeses, shredded lettuce, mayo, lettuce, mustards.
If you really want to impress your guest, try making your own board! We went to our local hardware store and purchased table tops for round boards and shelves for rectangular boards. We each picked a design, printed it, transferred it with carbon paper, and used a wood burner to permanently add the designs to our boards. Some of us added a lip to the edge to help keep items from falling off. Once they were done being decorated, we sealed them with a mixture of one part bees wax and 2 parts mineral oil.
Whether you make your own board or purchase one, you and your guests are going to have a great time with this reborn trend!
