EurekaEureka's Profile

My husband ( Joel E. Arem ) has degrees in geology (MA) and mineralogy (PhD) from Harvard University.

He was a curator and research scientist at the Smithsonian Institution and has acted as a consultant to the National Geographic Society, Eastman Kodak Co., Encyclopedia Britannica Educational Corp. and the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, among others.

He is the author of dozens of popular and technical articles and 7 books on gems, minerals and crystals, including the all-time best selling popular gem and jewelry introduction (Gems and Jewelry, 1973, 2nd ed. 1993) and the world's most widely referenced book on gems, the Color Encyclopedia of Gemstones (1977, 2nd ed. 1987). He has been a dealer in fine gemstones and collector gems since 1972.

I have been a jewelry designer for over 30 years after having first received a B.A. in Fine Arts from American University in Washington, D.C. My area of concentration was silk-screening. Years later, this ability to layer colors and combine textures in unique ways became instrumental when I began designing beaded necklaces. During the late 1970's through the 1980's ,my husband and I traveled extensively for both of our businesses. We had some incredible buying trips to Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe where I acquired an enormous palette of beads and findings. These unique finds ( Eureka !) allowed me to create a huge and diverse catalog of unique handmade jewelry which was sold in numerous museum shops, fine art galleries, and upscale dept. stores.

My BEADLES line has been featured in Bloomingdales, Garfinkles, Saks Fifth Avenue, the Smithsonian's mail order catalogs and museum shops, the Chicago Art Institute's museum shop and mail order catalog, the Seattle Museum of Fine Art, the Smithsonian's Air & Space Museum and Sackler Gallery, and many boutiques and shops in the U.S., Canada and Europe. I have also been featured in the Washington Post, Baltimore Magazine and in TV interviews. My beaded necklaces incorporated the many hundreds of different components at my fingertips, (including many one-of-a-kind antique Chinese pieces from the Ch'ing and Ming Dynasty) and helped to rapidly set me apart from other bead artists. Some of the components that comprise my semiprecious beaded jewelry include carved gemstone beads (many of which are no longer even available), Japanese glass beads, antique silver, coral, and pre-ban ivory from the late 1970's.

Many of these treasures you will find here in our shop!

► If you see some beads you absolutely love but you don't work with beads yourself, please contact me. I may have already designed earrings, bracelets or hand knotted necklaces with these very beads
