Skills and Techniques

Are you wondering what is macrame? Macramé is a form of textile making that uses knotting as opposed to weaving or knitting. The knots in macramé are square and form full hitch and double half hitches. Arab weavers are thought to be the first to macramé. They used extra thread to make knotted decorative threads on handmade fabrics. Sailors were a big part of creating this type of knotting. They used the knots to elaborately decorate their knives, bottles and parts of the ship.

Macramé uses a variety of materials. The main ones are cotton twine, hemp, leather, and yarn. Jewelry is made from macramé. The combination of knots and various beads (made out of glass, wood, or other materials), pendants, or shells can enhance the beauty of the knots to make a wonderful piece of jewelry. Sometimes, the focal point of a necklace can be wire wrapped or secured with an array of knots. While securing the pendant in the macramé, it also can add to the beauty of the piece.

Macramé is an old art form that is still in use today. It is mainly used to make jewelry and for decorative purposes much like when macramé was created. Its beauty and ornate look is one that has with stood the test of time

We all have a story to tell,
The story of our lives, the story of our choices, the story of our successes or failures...
Creating and through my art I somehow share my story, my feelings and beliefs.
I come from a family of artists, my aunt paints and learnt macramé when living in Africa, I was a child when this was also my first encounter with this artwork watching her making curtains for our home.
My Great-grandfather made violins, great – grandmother handmade wedding gowns and vintage dresses.
My grandmother was extremely skilled in a very ancient technique of making rugs called “Arraiolos Rugs” The history of Arraiolos is long and rich, since many peoples have stayed here, each leaving their marks. The regions shows trace of human presence since ancient times, presumably since the Neolithic or even Chalcolithic. The region in Arraiolos municipality was probably significantly occupied by humans as early as the 4th millennium BC. The quality of the motifs and unique stitches of Arraiolos carpets are worldwide recognized.
My grandmother is still today my biggest inspiration, what I do is a celebration to her and everything she teach me.
I make macramé and Jewellery Design for more than 1o years, after my daughter was born and diagnosed autistic nonverbal, I had both the need to change profession in order to be more present in her life and help her the best I could in her development needs.
I never imagined how much of a passion I would have for this craft. It has changed my life. Through difficult times creating has kept me going, it is truly therapeutic.
Macramé is my way of meditating.
I make everything from jewellery design, photography, editing, packaging and shipping, this micro business is a one person only job.
I have always loved and appreciated anything and everything that’s is handmade, handmade tells a story, handmade is meaningful, handmade is without any doubt love.
