I’m always getting Rutilated and Tourmalinated Quartz mixed up. What’s the difference? Read on and learn more about both.
Quartz is the most common mineral on Earth. It is found in nearly every
geological environment and is a component of almost every rock type. It
makes up about 12% of the earth's crust, occurring in a wide variety of
igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. It is also the most varied in terms
of variety and color. Quartz is a 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness.
Rutilated quartz is found in Australia, Brazil, Kazakhstan, Madagascar,
Norway, Pakistan and the United States.
Rutile is a major ore of titanium, which is a metal used for high tech
alloys. It often forms needle-like crystal inclusions inside quartz. This
form of quartz is known as rutilated quartz and it looks like small bars of
imbedded gold. Rutilated quartz is quartz stone with rutile enclosures. Rutile
is very high on the refractive
index and disperses more than almost any other mineral. This means
that when rutile appears in other minerals, it almost always
appears in long, thin shots of color. In some gorgeous examples, rutilated
quartz looks as if it is filled with gold fibers. Rutile is a 6 on the Mohs
Because of the difference in hardness between the two materials and because
of the way rutile forms inside, this can be a difficult stone to attain a
smooth surface without pits. In many
pieces of rutilated quartz, the rutile inclusions are all on the same axis.
Because of this, each individual rutile strand is visible. The effect is
uniquely beautiful. Prized examples of this stone often include complete
rutiles that are entirely encased in quartz. In these stones, the rutile does
not extend past the barrier of the quartz edge, and can therefore be properly
polished. As a rule of thumb, gemstones are more highly valued if they have few
or no inclusions. Rutilated quartz is unique because it is more highly valued
for its inclusions.
Rutilated quartz is unique because instead of red or black inclusions, in
quartz the rutile inclusions are a beautiful, translucent, golden-yellow color. No two
stones are alike. One stone may have only a few inclusions; another may have so
many that the stone appears opaque. Also, the needle-shaped inclusions may form
in sprays or in a random fashion.
Also called Venus' hairstone, or Fleches d’amour, or Cupid’s darts, this gem

Some believe rutilated quartz has the power to aid sleep and depression, to

Rutile is said to intensify the metaphysical properties of its host crystal
and to enhance one's understanding of difficult situations. It is also said to
enhance creativity and to relieve depression and loneliness. Brings forth each
person's strengths, originality, aids sleep, relate to others. Rutilated quartz
is also said to slow down the aging process and is said to be a strong healer.
What is the difference between Rutilated and Tourmalinated Quartz?
Rutile is not the only mineral that forms inclusions within quartz stones.
Rutilated quartz is sometimes confused with tourmalinated quartz. Tourmalinated
(or tourmalated) quartz is a quartz stone with needle-like inclusions of black
or dark green tourmaline embedded within it. This gemstone, like rutilated
quartz, may be used in ornamental pieces or jewelry, whether faceted or as a
cabochon. Tourmalated Quartz is clear quartz that contains long, thin crystals
of black or green tourmaline within the larger quartz crystal. A quartz
crystal may have only a few thin tourmaline crystals growing inside it, or it
may be filled with them and look quite black and almost opaque. Tourmalated
Quartz is clear or milky Quartz with black or green Tourmaline needles.
Some earth-based faiths believe that gemstones contain certain spiritual and
healing properties. In this arena, rutilated quartz is believes to bring forth
one’s personal strengths, empowers originality, and helps one to related to
others. It is also believed to relieve feelings of loneliness and depression. The
clear quartz is an amplifier while the black tourmaline is a cleansing,
grounding influence. Tourmalinated quartz is said to assists with clear
thinking, protect from unhealthy energies, and clear energy patterns. The vibrations emanating from the crystalline
structure of Tourmalated Quartz interact with your personal energy to
