Support handmade and save the earth! Instead of supporting the giant corporate machine of big box stores this Christmas, shop online and buy locally and green! Help employ someone right here in the USA by perusing the selection of gift ideas on Artfire and giving the gift of upcycled, recycled, repurposed handmade. Worldwide artists display their creations and wares at this diverse site with a focus on handmade, and Artfire encourages their artists to branch out and promote themselves on other sites as well. Artfire is a community driven marketplace with lots to offer this holiday. Here’s what I found poking around using the search term UPCYCLING this evening.
These clever little bracelets are made by Lady Bug Boutique out of old toothbrushes! How creative and eco, and this one is my favorite color. There are many other interesting lower priced upcycled creations at Lady Bug Boutique, and crocheted goodies as well. This upcycler hails from Vienna, VA.
This eco artist caught my eye with the contrasting variety of tastes for which you can shop. From body parts to VW Bugs to one of my favorites, a butterfly. Collage Orama combines recycled dictionary pages with interesting print over the dictionary page. They actually take old books that are going to be destroyed, and then print an image over that for framing. Currently they are offering a buy three get one free deal. I bet you could find something for anyone here. You may have a Nook, but help preserve a book! Only critiscism - get a banner!
I almost left Creations by Ingrid out of this article due to lacking a banner, but there’s such a large assortment of inexpensive but creative and one-of-a-kind pieces, that you have to take a look. From Elizabth City, NC Creations by Ingrid upcycles soda cans into jewelry and purses, soda can artwork, recycled magazine purses and clutches and more.
The Dusty Raven amazed me with its rainbow orbed arachnids. Enormous spider crafted from upcycled materials are the perfect gift for that hard to buy for boyfriend. Buy a web too. This twisted artist reminds one of Tim Burton. Taking unwanted salvaged scrap and junk and twisting it into garden art, birdhouses, trees, bugs, flowers and other oddities. I tell the spiders in my house they can live so long as they stay up where I can’t reach them, but I might just reach out and buy this one for someone for Christmas!
Finally Tin Can Sally in Eliot, ME needs no promoting, but still makes such neat and unique metal art. From key chains to switch plates the nostalgia of some of the labels made me think of cooking in my Grandmother’s kitchen. Old license plates are fashioned into useful keychains. Metal tins become switch plate covers. There’s definitely a memory here for everyone.
So whether you're looking for stocking stuffers or the perfect gift, there's lots to buy handmade on Artfire. Help employ someone right here in the USA by supporting handmade.
