Painting the Elephant Bangle - Part 2

Welcome to Part 2 of this blog series about painting an elephant bangle.  Here is a link to Painting the Elephant Bangle - Part 1 in case you missed it and would like to take a look.

Just to refresh memories, this is where we left off last week with Part 1 - the bangle with some highlighting and shadows added:

Moving on from there, I added more depth to the background to give a feeling for rain forest vegetation:

Adding trees to the foreground in the form of trunks and branches:

The trees with leaves - they were looking rather like skeletons above!

I think it's beginning to look a bit like a rain forest now.

While it's probably breaking a rule, I've always painted the backgrounds of my paintings first before adding the main subject.  Many painters paint the background around the subject, but I think doing it this way gives a more seamless look.  What do I know - being self taught I probably break a lot of rules!

Like many, I'm familiar with the elephants who live on the savannas of Africa and wasn't sure that my rain forest depiction was going to be accurate.  After doing some research I found that the counterpart to the savanna or bush elephants are the African forest elephants.  Rare creatures, not much is known about them and their habits.

More information about forest elephants will be forthcoming once they make their appearance on the bangle.

I hope you are enjoying sharing this journey with me.  Stay turned for Part 3 next week!

I am in awe at the detail you have added to the background. I love the tree trunks and the tree roots. Stunning work. If you have visited my shop you know I love trees. LOL

Catherine, even though I'm a bit late responding, your comments made my day! Part 3 coming up next!

Man, I am so glad you are breaking the rules! I would love to wear the bangle just the way it is with the rain forest trees - it's so beautiful and full of depth. Look forward to the next installment. Thanks for taking us on your creative journey! Peace and joy . . . Catherine

Thank you so much, for your lovely comments! The elephants will be coming soon and it's good to know I'm not the rule breaker I thought! Maybe the other way around is breaking the rules, or perhaps there are no rules. It's just all about creating no matter how it's done. Ah, yes. The Heffalumps!

In my experience, most good painters at least block in the background before they proceed to the main subject. On a small scale piece, I'd say it's impossible to do it any other way. (So don't worry, you're not breaking any rules!)
