READ THE MANUAL
The first step you have to do is to read your camera's manual. Why? Because every camera model and brand has different settings from one another. You really need to check what settings would work best for the kind of photography you want to achieve. These tutorials below cover both for DSLR and standard pocket (point and shoot) cameras.

PHOTOGRAPHY USING NATURAL LIGHT
I love using natural light for taking pictures of my jewelry as I found they give the best result and the colors always true. I live in a tropical country (Indonesia) where I get 12 hours of sun all year long. So given the environment, I choose to use the free source of light, the sun.

LIGHT BOX / LIGHT TENT PHOTOGRAPHY
For you who live in an evironment that isn't so supportive to get natural light and have decent space in your house, maybe you'd like to set up a light tent/light box. Here I found some cool tutorial provided by EZcube Light Box (I'm not related to them in any way, btw). Even if you don't have a light box, you should read these tutorials as some of the tips can be adapted to natural lighting photograhy as well.

DO IT YOURSELF PHOTOGRAPHY TOOLS
If you're a creative critter, maybe you'd like to build your own light box and tools to save money. There are tons of tutorials available online and here are several select ones.
