Skills and Techniques

Fused glass or "warm glass" is created by cutting pieces of compatible glass and layering them on top of each other. The assembled glass is fired in a kiln at temperatures between 1100 and 1500 degrees Fahrenheit to fuse the pieces together. To create a plate or a bowl, the piece is fired a second time to the desired shape by "slumping" or bending the glass over a mold. The finished piece is a unique work of art that is completely functional and safe for food or other household use.

Get to Know

First Light Glass specializes in fused glass art, jewelry and home decor designed and handcrafted by artist Dawn Montgomery. Dawn has been working with stained glass and fused glass since 2003. She has a home studio in Jacksonville, Florida where all of her art glass is created. She attended architecture school at the University of Virginia and Georgia Institute of Technology earning a Bachelors and Masters degree in City Planning with a minor in Fine Art. She worked for seven years as a city planner and then decided to stay at home with her three young children. In 2003 she took a stained glass class and fell in love with the medium of glass. Fused glass soon followed along with a glass kiln and home studio. Dawn says, "Working with fused glass feels like I am painting. When I enter my studio I focus on my art and leave the stresses of life outside."
