Handmade Red Jasper Focal Bead in Wire Woven Copper Frame Pendant
This red jasper gemstone medallion pendant is encased in Artistic copper wire (tarnish resistant) woven cage. It is the ultimate accessory for the favorite southwest attire. It consists of 3 long wires woven together with a smaller wire of the same color. The woven pattern is constructed by weaving 1 wire 2 times then 2 wires 2 times and finally 3 wires 2 times. Then repeated in reverse. The long straight weaving pattern piece is then sculptured to encircle the stone resulting in a close frame. This is the beginning of making the encasement cage. The cage wires are unwrapped wires. On the front they crisscross at the bottom of the stone. On the back three wires reach from below the bail down to the bottom of the stone. They are attached to the frame and slightly bent to fit tight against the jasper stone. The encasement insures that the stone is locked into place and stable to wear. The bail is an unwrapped wire formed into 2 loops. One of the extra wires left, is wire wrapped and then incorporated into the decorative loops just below the bail.
This striking pendant will last many years with proper care. Since the wire used is Artistic Tarnish Resistant Copper wire the luster of color will remain bright, unlike that of natural copper. (See Below)

Wire wrapping is one of the oldest techniques for making handmade jewelry. This technique is done with jewelry wire and findings similar to wire (for example, head-pins) to make components. The pharaohs of ancient Egypt wore pendants that were sometimes of huge dimensions, usually bearing commemorative or auspicious scenes in which the sovereign is being deified. Other pendants were in the shape of flies, winged scarabs, vultures, the eye of the god Horus, falcons, and sacred serpents. An exquisite example of an early gold pendant is that of two hornets clasped together, found in Mycenae and dating from the 17th century bce. Etruscan pendants were decorated with spindles and cylinders, figured, or in the shape of human heads. Greek and Hellenistic pendants usually formed the entire necklace. Pendants in the shape of a bulla are frequent in Roman necklaces, but there are also examples of cameos, intaglios, and gold coins mounted as pendants.
During the Middle Ages, characteristic jewels were the reliquary, or devotional, pendant and the cross, chased or enamelled with religious subjects and often set in an architectural frame.
