Handmade Cigar Pencil with Chrome hardware in Yellow Hackbberry
This is a Cigar style mechanical pencil turned out of Yellow Hackberry, with Chrome hardware. It is 6 inches long and weighs about 2 ounces. The pencil is a twist action, requiring just a quarter twist to expose and retract the .5 mm lead.
This wood is a spalted hackberry blank. The common hackberry is a medium-sized tree, 9 to 15 metres (30 to 50 ft) in height, with a slender trunk. In the best conditions in the southern Mississippi Valley area, it can grow to 40 metres (130 ft). It has a handsome round-topped head and pendulous branches. It prefers rich moist soil, but will grow on gravelly or rocky hillsides. The roots are fibrous and it grows rapidly. In the western part of its range, trees may still grow up to 29 m (95 ft). The maximum age attained by hackberry is probably between 150 and 200 years in ideal conditions.
It is a very comfortable pencil for those with larger hands or for those who have trouble grasping smaller objects. It's about 11 mm in diameter where I grasp it for writing.
A bit about of the process of creating these pencils: I start with a hand-selected section of wood and the components that make up the mechanism of the pen. I then cut the wood to length and drill holes to make room for the mechanism. The prepared blank is set up on my lathe, and I then spend a fair amount of time working the wood down to the proper diameter and shape to match the mechanism. Sand paper is applied, through a number of grits, to get a nice, smooth surface. Several coats of finish are applied and buffed. The wood and mechanism are then combined to create a fabulous writing instrument.
