African Opal and Turquoise Salwag Pucalet Handmade Adjustable Necklace
Organic betel nut seeds and rich African opal are the key factors in this artisan creation. This necklace is perfect for summer as I have incorporated two very light-weight materials which makes it easy to wear on those warm summer days. I have named this beauty "Mesi" which means water woman in Yao language. To begin, I selected a wonderful focal bead in a warm brass with a great blue green verdigris patina. The mix of the warm brass against the verdigris color really makes the daisy design stand out. This lovely bead is produced by a company called Zola.
African opal is what this stone is called in the beading industry, but no one can really say exactly what makes it up. It has been verified that African opal is a natural stone and I simply love it! These African opal beads are a creamy beige color with veins of black and translucent, milky gray-white. They are a wonderfully neutral color that works well with almost any palette. In addition, these beads are extremely light-weight.
Betel nut or salwag is the fruit of the Areca Palm tree which is found in humid areas such as East Africa and parts of Asia. Natural salwag seeds are beige with brown flecks throughout. These turquoise salwag seeds have been smoothed and dyed this lovely turquoise color. The pucalet shape varies to add interest to the look of each bead. In between the salwag and the African opal I have used smooth brass hematite rondelles. Smaller African opal beads have also been artfully placed between some of the salwag seeds. The necklace has been ended using Via Murano Russian gold twisted crimps and antique brass wire guards to protect the beading wire from wear. This will add longevity to your necklace. I used Soft Flex beading wire in a bone color that is produced in the United States.
For the closure I selected a Vintaj brass lobster claw clasp and added 2 inches of etched oval brass chain to make the necklace adjustable. The necklace length will range from 18.5 inches or 47 centimeters to 21.5 inches or 54.6 centimeters in length.
Your necklace will come with a complimentary jewelry pouch for storing. In addition, I will add a simple pair of matching earrings at no additional cost to you! The earrings will hang from hypoallergenic leverback ear wires that are produced in the United States.
Caring for your necklace: To enjoy your jewelry for many years takes some care. Most stones are quite strong, but try to avoid dropping or banging your jewelry against hard objects as the stones can crack or break. Keep in mind that the salwag are organic in nature. Don't leave your jewelry in direct sunlight. Store your jewelry as you would any delicate item. Storing in the original box is good, or in a jewelry box. Don't let items bang into each other. Personally, I make a loose coil of my necklaces and keep each and keep them in the jewelry pouch. Keep chemicals such as perfume, lotions and make-up away from your jewelry. Rule of thumb, make your jewelry the last thing you put on, and the first thing you take off.
To keep your jewelry clean you can wipe your stones with a soft cloth, or you can use a damp cloth when needed. I strongly advise against immersing your jewelry in water. Never use harsh abrasives or cleaners.

Note: Please be aware that not all monitors will show colors exactly the same. The colors may appear lighter or darker based on the type of monitor you have. As I edit my photos I ensure they are as exact as they can be to my jewelry pieces. Natural and artificial lighting can enhance or diffuse shades of stones and crystals as you wear them. I also use different backgrounds in my photos so that you can see some of the color variance. Enjoy!
