Rag Quilt Kit for Baby Girl Ready for YOU to Sew and Give
PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION COMPLETELY AND ASK ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE BEFORE BUYING. I will be glad to answer any questions or send more pictures if needed.
From a SMOKE FREE, PET FREE home, this is a pink Rag Quilt KIT for a Baby Girl - pre-cut squares; ready for YOU to sew into a beautiful rag quilt. No shopping for fabric, calculating yardage needed, left over wasted fabric, measuring, or hours of cutting. These tedious tasks are done for you, but you will still be giving a hand-made quilt.
ALSO INCLUDED with your kit will be my own instructions (with some illustrations) for putting together a rag quilt.
All fabric is NEW. I never use fabric that has been used, worn, or from another quilt or blanket or garment. It is also pre-washed and dried to make it pre-shrunk. You can have this quilt done in an afternoon, or less.
If you want to make your gift yourself, but have the tedious measuring and cutting work done for you, this is the perfect gift. It will still be a special gift made by YOU. All you have to do is sew straight seams - no curves to sew, no measuring, no cutting out squares. You only need to sew the blocks together and then snip the edges for the ragging to make a beautiful rag quilt. A rag quilt is a great project for someone who is a new quilter, and also fun for the experienced quilter. Rag quilts hold up extremely well with use.
You will need ragging scissors (or any fabric scissors you have), thread and a sewing machine. You could actually do this by hand. My grandmother did not own a sewing machine and made many, many beautiful quilts - ALL BY HAND SEWING and hand quilting.
Rag quilts are fun to make and don't take a lot of time. The delicate pink colors and soft cotton flannel are very likely to make this baby's favorite blanket. Baby's mom will be proud to show off this special gift also. Photo 6 is a sample of a finished rag quilt (different fabric patterns than the ones for this, but this gives an idea what the finished product will be like).
The size of the finished quilt depends on the seam allowance you use. For a smaller rag quilt (such as for a baby or doll quilt) I often use just a 1/2 inch seam allowance. For a larger rag quilt or throw I will use a 3/4 inch seam allowance. The 1/2 inch seam allowance will make your quilt slightly larger.
Since flannel is warm anyway, I only use two layers when I make a cotton flannel rag quilt. You will receive 30 pink pattern squares for the quilt top. Each square is 9 x 9 inches. With a 1/2 inch seam allowance on all sides, you will have 8 inch square blocks and the finished quilt will be approximately 40 x 48 inches (5 squares across and 6 squares down) (5 x 8 = 40 inches wide; 6 x 8 = 48 inches long). For the top you will receive 5 different pink patterns (6 of each pattern). See photos 1, 2 and 3 above. For the back you will receive 30 white squares the same size as the squares for the quilt top. The backing fabric is the same soft cotton flannel - white with a delicate pink rose. The back squares are all the same pattern. See photos 4 and 5 above. I AM GIVING YOU A COUPLE EXTRA TOP AND BOTTOM SQUARES in case you might need an extra.
If you want to use a 3/4 inch seam allowance all around the finished quilt will be approximately 38.5 inches wide by 46.25 inches long.
I am also enclosing my personal hand written (well, actually typed) instructions for putting your rag quilt together - just in case you are new to rag quilting. I am also enclosing a miniature size sample of how the rag quilt looks when it is put together. See photos 7 and 8 above. These little blocks are approximately 4 inches square. They show what the front and back will look like.
I recommend ragging scissors, but any fabric scissors you have will do to snip the edges for the ragging. If you are new to using ragging scissors, BE CAREFUL and keep them out of the reach of children. They are very sharp - which makes them so great for ragging. My ragging scissors has a clasp to lock them which is a good feature if you are going to buy a pair. They are relatively inexpensive and useful for many other projects also.
