I used to wonder why people would have some many art mediums...then I figured it out. We get bored with the same old same old. So here is my newest.
This Pine Straw Basket is stitched by hand with a needle and #10 100% mercerized cotton crochet thread. It was waxed as used. I gathered the pine straw in the woods by my house, by hand, myself. I harvested vines from my yard for the button in the middle (i.e. the starting point). I didn't have any idea what to make, so there was no pattern.
This is a very old form of basket weaving called coiling and I taught it to myself over time through the use of books and the internet. I am very proud of the way it turned out.
The basket measures 6" across the rim and almost 2 1/2" tall at its tallest. The rim is slightly larger than the actual bowl of the basket. I like to produce things that people can use in their every day life without worry of hurting it. It is not just to be looked at, unless of course that is what you want it for. I myself love looking at it. But I might just be a proud mama.
This basket has not been treated with any coatings such as wax or shellac as I prefer the slight pine scent.
