Frequently Asked Questions:
What is the suit made out of?
EVA Foam (aka: Ethylene-vinyl Acetate) is by far one of the most versatile and important materials for Cosplayers and builders and it is the main material out of which your costume will be constructed. It is used in the simplest designs to the most elaborate builds across all levels of Cosplay. Before you buy an EVA cosplay costume, please learn about this type of material first, so as not to question the quality of our products upon receiving the goods. EVA foam is a lightweight, closed-cell foam that is commonly used for craft projects, floor mats and even making shoes. It is versatile and malleable while also retaining its rigidity, which makes it perfect for cosplay. EVA foam is not like plastic or fiberglass. It is prone to wrinkling or cracking if put under a lot of stress by external forces. However, because it is malleable and so easy to work with, repairs are very simple and easy to undergo. Provided you take care of your costume, the EVA will easily hold its shape and color for years.
The helmet of your Iron Man costume will be 3D printed out of durable plastic PLA filament. PLA (Polylactic Acid) is one of the two most commonly used desktop 3D printing filaments (with the other being ABS filament). It is the "default" recommended material for many desktop 3D printers because it is useful in a broad range of printing applications, has the virtue of being both odorless and low-warp, and does not require a heated bed. PLA filament is also one of the more eco-friendly 3D printer materials available; it is made from annually renewable resources and requires less energy to process compared to traditional plastics. Since the helmet is 3D printed, this allows for maximum accuracy and rich detail, along with increased durability and strength.
What is the costume making process?
We will begin by asking you to provide us with your body measurements. We ask that you take the measurements in centimeters since they are smaller and more precise. After we receive your measurements, we will then begin the process of sizing all of the pieces to your specifications. With many of the costumes we make, we are able to freehand the pieces without the aid of a 3D papercraft program like Pepakura. But when we do use Pepakura, we scale all the individual pieces, print them, then transfer the patterns the EVA foam. We will then cut the foam pieces out with X-acto knives to ensure the cleanest of cuts. When the pieces are cut, we will assemble and put them together using contact cement. We use contact cement because it creates an extremely durable bond and is resistant to water and heat. When all of the pieces are assembled and put together, the raw foam of your build will be completed. Since EVA foam is a naturally porous material, any paint that is applied to it will be soaked up, leaving you with a dull and shoddy paint job. To combat this, we seal the foam with PlastiDip. PlastiDip is a rubberized coating that, when applied to foam, seals up the pores. It does not eat away at the foam, and it provides a flexible waterproof coating for the armor. When the foam is sealed, we will prime it and paint it with high-gloss metallic automotive paint to give it a shiny, metallic, amor look. Although the armor is not made of plastic, after the sealing and painting process and because of the way we treat it, it will have gained a plastic-like quality and hardness. We will then apply a few coats of protective gloss to make it shiny and scratch-proof. Once the painting is done, electronics such as lights and sound effects will be installed. After that, your costume will be shipped to you.
How do I repair warped or damaged foam?
These costumes are made of foam and are not indestructible. They can be prone to warping or breaking. If the foam has been warped or bent, there is an easy fix. All you need to do to bend it back into shape is to apply some heat to the foam. A heat gun is good but if you don’t have one of those, a hair dryer will do perfectly fine. Simply apply heat to the unpainted side of the foam until it is warm and malleable. Move the heat around. If you keep it in one spot for too long, you’ll burn the foam and damage the paint. Once it’s flexible, bend and hold it back into the position you want it to be until it cools. Once it’s completely cool, you can let go and it should hold its shape again.
If some pieces are cracked or broken, you can pick up a bottle of contact cement at your local hardware store or Walmart. When using contact cement on the foam, brush one to two coats of it onto each side of the pieces you intend to join. Let it set for a few minutes while the foam soaks it up. After a few minutes, you can begin to connect the pieces you want to join together. This should create a tight and strong bond between the pieces. Let them sit and cure for at least 24 hours before you try to wear the pieces that was broken. If you don’t have access to contact cement, hot glue is always a good option for repairs. But if you want something that is more heat resistant, contact cement is the better and preferred choice.
Can I pay for the costume in installments?
No. I only accept payment via Etsy payments, and unfortunately, Etsy does not allow me to set up payment plans, so the entire amount is due at the time of purchase. They do it that way to protect me, as a seller. Fortunately, to protect you as the buyer, your purchase and money are insured by Etsy. So if anything goes wrong with your order, you are covered and protected.
