"Life" Ankh Arabic Calligraphy Print
Egyptian Ankh Limited Edition Arabic Calligraphy Giclee Print
Ink on Paper 30cm x 48cm, 2020
"Art is how we justify our existence" An ankh is depicted using the phrase "In art, we justify our existence" written 16 times in the Jali Diwani script. One of the oldest known written symbols, the golden ankh is the ancient hieroglyph meaning 'life'. It still appears in regular use today six millennium later as a symbol of the Coptic Christian community of Egypt. The events of this year have caused many of us to contemplate our mortality or asked are selves what is the point? While the great Pharaohs have come and gone long ago, the art of ordinary Egyptian still excites us with its beauty and mystery. The gold of the ankh is replaced with the colors of what we might strive to value as such, the biodiversity of life on our little marble.
