ILEX opaca fem. 'Satyr Hill' - Single Plants
This offering is for single plants of this variety. These are growing in 2.5 inch containers.
Female. Dark olive green leaf flatter and more rounded than the species. Large red fruit. Native as far north as the southern parts of New England and thrives on Cape Cod, where plants can develop into impressive trees with picturesque branching and exfoliating, multicolored bark. This is an understory plant which enjoys moist, well drained, acid, organic soils, part shade and protection from drying winter winds. Once established it tolerates more extreme conditions. At our nursery we have planted I. opaca in a variety of sites throughout our grounds, including sunny areas fully exposed to the weather year around, where it performs remarkably well. When planted in the open and sheared, plants become denser and can be easily maintained branched to the ground. Although American Holly is subject to several minor insect pests, with minimal care it produces a reliable crop of berries (technically drupes) every year. A male plant, which can pollinate many females, should be planted within 100 feet for reliable berry set on female plants. This species is easy to grow from seed and actually has begun to seed-in around our nursery, but named cultivars give best landscape value. Our female plants are cutting-grown selections of named cultivars. All I. opaca cultivars are deer resistant. Zones 6 to 9.
