This hand painted chipmunk pendant features a cheeky chipmunk dining on sunflower seeds. The necklace is made of hand painted wood beads in shades of green, brown and cream paired with moonstone, green aventurine and Tierra Cast spacer beads.
The back of the pendant has a surprise sure to delight as the same mischievous chipmunk is hoping to finish his meal!
Chipmunks are fascinating little creatures. Active by day, they stuff they cheek pouches with seeds and nuts, which they store in their underground nests.
Their scientific name is Tamias, Latin for treasurer. They live up to their name; the hoard of one western species of chipmunk was found to contain over 67,500 items.
During the winter, they sleep for long periods, waking regularly to feed from their stashed treasures. In the spring a litter of two to six young are born.
They are also handsome with their reddish brown fur and the distinctive white strips down their backs and under their eyes.
If you've ever taken the time to observe, these busy little guys, you know how fun they are to watch as they scurry about.
Each wood bead used in this necklace has been hand painted by me. Several coats of sealer has been applied to both the beads and the pendant to protect the paint and provide a glossy finish.
The pendant is made of wood.
The pendant measures 1.5 inches/3.81 cm across and the necklace is 19 inches/48 cm in length.
