Looking for a tall blanket bench for the end of the bed, a plant stand by the window...a place to put that wide screen TV?

The bench/narrow table is both functional and original. Comfortable in any home decor the bench is made from solid wood, rescued from backyards and roadways. this piece is totally handmade. The top, stretchers, and ends, are made from an Elm I felled and milled for a tree service customer. The legs and turned parts (spacers and tension rod connector) are Oak. All 9 turned pieces are stained a deep red while the legs are left the natural warm tone of the Red Oak log from which they are milled. On the top and ends, a rich Early American brown finish allows the bench to match most other furniture in the room.

This bench features aged hardware adding strength to the bottom structure as well as visual interest. The aged steel pieces add visual interest as well as strength. This furniture piece is built to last by hand. There are adjustable feet for each of the legs which allow the bench to be stable even if the floor is a little uneven. The feet are turned from the same Oak as the legs and spacers and have the same deep red stain.

The bench measures approximately 22 in. tall and is about 6 feet in length. The width of the top varies from 14 to 13 inches, in a natural curve. On the sides the edges feature a "live edge", this was once just below the bark of the living tree. Evidence of it demise can be seen in the insect tracks that mark the edges. The end inserts are coopered (curved) to compliment the gentile curve of the top. The top is mortised to receive the tenons on the legs which are extend through the spacers. Wood caps cover the hidden screws that securely tie the top directly to the legs. The long stretchers are through mortised into the legs, and pinned on the outside edge in a method of joinery that has existed for ages. For strength the leg units are bolted to the short stretchers between the legs, and a tension rod runs the length of the bottom to eliminate end to end play from the leg units. All hardware has square nuts, as the newer six sided nuts are a relative new invention. Each piece of hardware was aged to remove the nickle coating and simulate older steel that has been around as long as the living trees that contribute to the beauty of this piece.

The top has been planed by hand and all pieces sanded. Those that have stain were colored and re- sanded to smooth the grain raised when the finish was applied. Several coats of polyurethane gloss finish were applied to add gloss and protect the wood. The top has a near mirror finish as can be noted in the photos.

With the Tiga Gates of the Eastern Asia as an inspiration, the bench/table has a simple yet refined style that will compliment interior home decor from rustic to Nouveau Loft-style.
