GOLDEN BERYL Loose Gemstone Vintage Faceted Oval 5.31cts fgs111
Golden beryl loose faceted gemstone, an extremely bright vintage oval cut stone weighing 5.31 carats and measuring 12.9 x 9.3 x 6.7 mm
Beryl is the chief ore of the element beryllium and is mined in large quantities throughout the world. The ore material is opaque, but transparent beryl is also widespread and is cut into faceted gemstones. Like tourmaline, pure beryl is colorless (goshenite) but chemical impurities in the growth environment impart a huge variety of hues, creating "color varieties". Chromium produces a dark green variety called emerald. Manganese yields pink beryl, called morganite, and iron can produce yellow, or "golden" beryl, as well as a blue or blue-green variety called aquamarine, named after the color of sea water. Greenish-blue material can be heated with a process that eliminates the yellow component, leaving a pure blue color. A century ago the blue-green hue was preferred, but today's market seems to favor pure blue.
Iron is a curious element when present as an impurity in minerals, because it occurs in several "oxidation states", called ferrous and ferric iron. Ferrous iron usually creates blue-green coloration, and in beryl the result is aquamarine, the birthstone for March. Ferric iron produces yellow and red-orange hues. Iron minerals are the source of the orange and red colors that we find in deserts and canyons like the ones in the American southwest.
This stone is a medium-dark golden yellow color with a tinge of orange and was custom-cut from Brazilian material that was mined in the mid 1970s. It is visually near-flawless and cut in a way that maximizes brilliancy. The back of the stone is "closed", that is, there is no leakage of light; trapping reflected light maximizes brilliancy. The brilliancy of this particular stone is enhanced because of superior polish and exceptional clarity.
One of the photographs shows several of the books Joel has written. The Color Encyclopedia of Gemstones has for more than 30 years been the world's most authoritative source of information on (and pictures of) gemstones, including many of the rarer gems. (books not included in purchase!)

IMPORTANT NOTICE: POSTAGE RATES HAVE RISEN DRAMATICALLY IN 2016
ORDERS INSIDE USA: A charge of $3.60 covers any first class shipment up to 8 ounces. Our beads vary so much in weight that it is impossible for us to apply a single add-on charge for multiple product orders. We will continue to refund to customers any amount that greatly exceeds our actual cost of shipping and handling.
ORDERS OUTSIDE USA: International First Class rates are now crazy: $13.50 for any package weighing from 1-8 ounces. Even an order for 2-3 small bead items may cost $13.50 or more, depending on the type of material (stone versus resin, for example). Please bear with us for a few weeks while we change our listings to account for the new rates. We apologize in advance if we have to adjust the postage cost of an order that has been placed. We will understand if an order is rescinded when the postage cost is too high relative to the product value.
All international orders have contents described as "loose beads" and are flagged as "commercial samples" or " gift" if you prefer to make your life easier when receiving your beads. If you'd like us to mark your order as " gift" instead please let us know!
All our beads are inspected one by one before being shipped. They are individually wrapped to protect them and then put in little plastic ziploc bags.
