Vintage Craft Book - Sculpting in Burlap by Margaret Hutchings
Up for sale is this lovely little vintage craft book -- "Sculpting In Burlap" by Margaret Hutchings, published and printed in 1975!
Library of Congress Catalog Card Number: 74-19853
"Ordinary, inexpensive burlap -- now readily available in a rainbow of colors -- can be transformed using scissors, bits of wire; and needle and thread into a gallery of uniquely charming sculpted figures.
Written by an experienced craftswoman who has herself pioneered this new and easy burlap-sculpture technique, the book shows how to make a wide range of human and animal figures, some ideal for a creche or other display, and how to ornament these cloth-sculpted models with ingenious small-scale props: long-tressed country maidens gather real fresh flowers in tiny straw baskets; young burlap-sculpted children frolic with a frisky burlap goat; an old woman hobbles towards a minute burlap hedgehog supported by a small wooden cane.
Are these figures really craft or art? It's difficult to say, but the technique is easy, fun, and quick to learn and the result is utterly gay and original. Possibilities for creativity and personal innovation are boundless and the figures can make perfect gifts or form the basis of a whole new kind of doll collection or decorating scheme.
Mrs. Hutchings is the author of many imaginative craft books including 'What Shall I Do Today?', 'Making Old Testament Toys', and 'Making and Using Finger Puppets', which Library Journal praised for its 'excellent instructions'."
This vintage book is in vintage condition -- it's a bit aged, but it's still looking pretty darn good! It's full of detailed instructions, black and white photos, and color photos. Enjoy!
