Curcuma Caesia commonly known as 'Black Turmeric' is a perennial underutilized herb of the family Zingiberaceae . This less discussed species has been gradually increasing in popularity in the interested community for its unmatched herbal properties and importence . Black Turmeric is nevertheless a stranger to the Eastern world where it plays an integral role in many cultures.
The perennial foliage dies down in late autumn and the rhizomes remain dormant in winter. The inflorescence appears in early spring from the base of the rhizomes. During summer monsoon season and the immediately following weeks, the plant grows fast and vigorously.
These plants or rhizomes are someway going to be one of the precious stuff in recent future in the stream of few other nature’s magical gifts like Annona Muricata & Simarouba Glauca etc.. It is the most rare and costliest rhizome in the Curcuma family.

Curcuma Caesia usually grows in moist deciduous forests. The plant has a characteristic rhizome flesh of bluish-black colour with pungent smell and hot bitter taste . The rhizome of the plant is aromatic, contains essential oil and used for a variety of purposes. The characteristic pungent smell of the rhizome is due to the presence of essential oil rich in camphor and starch.
In West Bengal, the rhizome of Curcuma Caesia is used during the worship or Puja ceremony for the Goddess Kali. For this reason Curcuma Caesia is called by name Kali Haldi in Bengali or Kala Haldi in Hindi. Since the word Kali, which is attributed to Goddess Kali, literally means black, Curcuma Caesia is vernacularly known as Black Turmeric.
