Handmade Red Jasper Focal Bead in Wire Woven Copper Frame Pendant

Details

TITLE:
Handmade Red Jasper Focal Bead in Wire Woven Copper Frame Pendant

DESCRIPTION:
This red jasper gemstone medallion pendant is encased in Artistic copper wire (tarnish resistant) woven cage. It is the ultimate accessory for the favorite southwest attire. It consists of 3 long wires woven together with a smaller wire of the same color. The woven pattern is constructed by weaving 1 wire 2 times then 2 wires 2 times and finally 3 wires 2 times. Then repeated in reverse. The long straight weaving pattern piece is then sculptured to encircle the stone resulting in a close frame. This is the beginning of making the encasement cage. The cage wires are unwrapped wires. On the front they crisscross at the bottom of the stone. On the back three wires reach from below the bail down to the bottom of the stone. They are attached to the frame and slightly bent to fit tight against the jasper stone. The encasement insures that the stone is locked into place and stable to wear. The bail is an unwrapped wire formed into 2 loops. One of the extra wires left, is wire wrapped and then incorporated into the decorative loops just below the bail.

This striking pendant will last many years with proper care. Since the wire used is Artistic Tarnish Resistant Copper wire the luster of color will remain bright, unlike that of natural copper. (See Below)

DEFINITIONS:

PENDANT: as defined by - https://www.britannica.com/art/pendant-jewelry
Pendant, in jewelry, ornament suspended from a bracelet, earring, or, especially, a necklace. Pendants are derived from the primitive practice of wearing amulets or talismans around the neck. The practice dates from the Stone Age, when pendants consisted of such objects as teeth, stones, and shells.

WIRE WEAVING/WRAPPING JEWELRY: By Wikipedia
Wire wrapping is one of the oldest techniques for making handmade jewelry. This technique is done with jewelry wire and findings similar to wire (for example, head-pins) to make components. Wire components are then connected to one another using mechanical techniques with no soldering or heating of the wire. Frequently, in this approach, a wire is bent into a loop or other decorative shape and then the wire is wrapped around itself to finish the wire component. This makes the loop or decorative shape permanent. The technique of wrapping wire around itself gives this craft its name of wire wrapping.

ARTISTIC WIRE: As described by BEADUCATION:
This wire is made by first plating the copper wire with a precision layer of pure silver. Then the enamel color and tarnish resistant coating on top of this silver plating is applied. The silver plating beneath the color, adds an incredible high-shine and brilliance to the wire. Artistic Wire is a permanently colored copper wire available in a wide range of colors and gauges. It has an exclusive enamel coating which is engineered to resist tarnish, chipping and peeling.

TARNISH RESISTANT:
Metal that has been covered with special coating that protects the surface from any oxidation and discoloration of the surface.

PENDANTS HISTORY: This article was most recently revised and updated by Virginia Gorlinski, Associate Editor on Britannica.com
The pharaohs of ancient Egypt wore pendants that were sometimes of huge dimensions, usually bearing commemorative or auspicious scenes in which the sovereign is being deified. Other pendants were in the shape of flies, winged scarabs, vultures, the eye of the god Horus, falcons, and sacred serpents. An exquisite example of an early gold pendant is that of two hornets clasped together, found in Mycenae and dating from the 17th century bce. Etruscan pendants were decorated with spindles and cylinders, figured, or in the shape of human heads. Greek and Hellenistic pendants usually formed the entire necklace. Pendants in the shape of a bulla are frequent in Roman necklaces, but there are also examples of cameos, intaglios, and gold coins mounted as pendants.
During the Middle Ages, characteristic jewels were the reliquary, or devotional, pendant and the cross, chased or enamelled with religious subjects and often set in an architectural frame. One of the most famous early pendant reliquaries, which belonged to Charlemagne, contained relics of the True Cross and the crown of thorns under a sapphire set with gold. In the 14th century it was customary for noblemen to wear necklaces with pendants bearing heraldic subjects; pendants worn by women generally depicted sentimental subjects.
Toward the beginning of the 16th century, pendants became decorative rather than religious objects. The Renaissance artists created numerous beautiful crosses and figured pendants modelled in high relief and depicting numerous subjects, such as mermaids, tritons, animals and ships, and mythological and religious scenes. Often, the irregular shapes of baroque pearls were exploited and adapted for the bodies of human beings or animals, whose faces and limbs were modelled in gold and enamelled.
In the Baroque period there was a return in pendants to engraved figures and intaglio and cameo cutting, framed in geometric decorative designs containing gems and, later, in ribbons and floral designs done mainly in diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and pearls. Such pendants continued to be popular until the end of the 18th century.
The Empire style attached no great importance to pendants, and most of the rare examples consist of cameo medallions. In the 19th century the Art Nouveau school created pendants with a lovely aesthetic line in which the most common motifs were women’s figures and profiles, butterflies, peacocks, insects, and flowers.

Inspiration/Story Behind This Product

My work starts as an idea then organic growth takes over until the mind screams STOP!

I was browsing through my stash of beads and came across this beautiful red jasper gemstone focal bead. I had a selection of wires close at hand and this reddish copper tarnish resistant wire seemed to be the perfect compliment. I wanted to make a medallion and at the same time knew that I would need to make a cage for the bead to remain secure. The result being this gorgeous pendant fit for a king or queen.

I consider my work Wearable Art...Miniature Works of Art, are a way to express ones love of things.

Great shipping, great packaging. I just thought the necklace was going to be more browns and greens and darker. It is a pretty necklace but not what I was expecting from the picture.
