Yarn: Bernat Handicrafter Holidays in White (98% Cotton, 2% Metallic Thread)

Dimensions: bottom of bag is approximately 8" in diameter; when laid flat, the bag measures approximately 13" wide across the middle and 17" tall from the bottom to the interior of the arm hole. Straps measure approximately 1.5" wide and 21" long - they will stretch some with use if items are heavy.

A solid bottom and durable straps that are crocheted into the body of the bag rather than sewn on make this tote strong enough to fill with as many canned goods as you can carry! A filet crochet inspired pattern of my own design makes up the body of the bag, giving you a unique and beautiful tote perfect for daily use or those quick trips to the grocery store.

Snow white yarn laced with metallic silver thread makes this a great holiday gift - or even a wedding gift!

Machine washable and dryable on cool, delicate cycles, but hand washing is recommended for best wear. Do not iron or dry clean.

Inspiration/Story Behind This Product

In 2011 I participated in a sculptural art project that used recycled plastic bags crocheted into breast-like shapes that were linked together to form a "reef" as part of an exhibition at the American Jewish Museum in Pittsburgh during the summer. The exhibit was called Too Shallow for Diving: The 21st Century is Treading Water and our contribution was called Something in the Water. Organized by Wendy Osher, a fiber artist and educator, this project was intended to help raise awareness of the hazards of plastic bags, 60 thousand of which are used every five seconds in the United States. Over the course of about two months and thanks to several donations from friends and family, I converted approximately 200 plastic bags into plarn, which I then crocheted into eleven different breast shapes. Afterwards, with a far better understanding of the dangers that plastic bags pose to our environment, I sought out a crochet pattern for a reusable market bag that I could make for myself and as gifts. I modified the pattern to work the straps into the bag itself, which made it stronger, but what I really wanted was a round-bottomed bag so with some experimentation, I created my own pattern. A small bag takes 8-9 hours to crochet, uses less than 300g of cotton yarn, and can save between 300 and 700 plastic bags a year, which is what the average person uses in that time. I'd say that's investing in our future, wouldn't you?
