Vintage PRECIOUS TOPAZ sherry color faceted antique 1.58 cts fg154
Vintage precious dark sherry color topaz faceted gemstone, a lovely antique cut stone weighing 1.58 carats and with dimensions 7.5 x 6.8 x 4.0 mm. This stone is a light yellowish orange color (like a fine sherry or cognac) and is eye-clean and very bright. It was produced in the late 1970s and is one of the many gems that Joel had acquired in Teofilo Otoni, Brazil on a buying trip.
? As a point of interest: The nomenclature of gemstones can sometimes be confusing, but confusion seems to be the rule when it comes to topaz, the birthstone for November. Topaz is a colorless mineral composed of hydrous aluminum silicate. It forms wonderful and often perfect crystals, sometimes of gigantic size (more than 100 kilograms). Traces of impurities produce various hues, including dark brown (from Russia), light yellowish brown (Mexico and Utah), green, blue, pink, red, and a huge palette of yellows and oranges. Of these, ONLY the yellow and orange varieties from Ouro Preto, Brazil are considered "precious topaz". If this material contains a trace of chromium, a pink or reddish coloration is produced that can be very intense - this material is given the unique appellation "Imperial topaz".
Gemstone sellers for many years have added the word "topaz" to much more common and less expensive stones, intending to thereby give these gems additional "status". The best example is "smoky topaz" (which is actually 'smoky' quartz), or "citrine topaz" (orange quartz). This is basically a false or misleading trade practice, but it has become so pervasive in the gemstone marketplace that its consequences are largely ignored.?
Topaz is extremely hard - 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, versus 7 for quartz and 9 for ruby and sapphire. Topaz has perfect cleavage so care must be taken when it is worn in rings, but the stone seems to hold up well in jewelry. Treated blue topaz (produced by irradiation of colorless material) is one of the most popular (and inexpensive) of all gems in the current marketplace. Red is the most prized and expensive topaz color, with large fine stones reaching several thousand dollars per carat at wholesale. The more familiar yellow and orange "precious" topaz varies in price with hue and depth of color, the darkest pure oranges being the most valuable.
The price is for this one faceted gemstone; the shipping cost includes insurance within the U.S. only.
One of the photographs shows several books that Joel has written. The Color Encyclopedia of Gemstones has for more than 30 years been the world's most authoritative source of information on (and pictures of) gemstones, including many of the rare gems, such as andalusite, and all the colors of spinel. Books not included in purchase!

ORDERS OUTSIDE USA: International First Class rates are now crazy: $13.50 for any package weighing from 1-8 ounces. Even an order for 2-3 small bead items may cost $13.50 or more, depending on the type of material (stone versus resin, for example). Please bear with us for a few weeks while we change our listings to account for the new rates. We apologize in advance if we have to adjust the postage cost of an order that has been placed. We will understand if an order is rescinded when the postage cost is too high relative to the product value.
