UNCORKED JEWELRY.. SAVING THE WORLD...ONE BOTTLE OF WINE AT A TIME!!
________________________________________________________________

Just when you think you have seen it all! After our Paris trip I was putting aside some of the wine corks I usually save from our special bottles and the inspiration hit me like a truckload of grapes heading to the the winery....REPURPOSE,REUSE, and RECYCLE these artistic little cylinders of natural cork tree to help reduce waste.

Most of the designs work as both a brooch pin and necklace and when you aren't wearing your UNCORKED treasure...she can be proudly displayed as a wine bottle "collar" by wrapping the rubber necklace around the bottle neck 3 times as shown.

Every cork I cut and sand by hand to create a flat back that lies perfectly against the body over a custom polymer clay smooth base. Each piece is finished in multiple coats of satin sealer for a permanent finish that makes the colors and any writing on the cork POP!

Inspiration/Story Behind This Product

In researching cork for my UNCORKED jewelry line, it was very enlightening to learn about the production of cork in the ancient cork oak forests. DID YOU KNOW?.......

*The use of synthetic corks (touted as more environmentally friendly by many) is actually hurting the environment, animal habitat and the cork industry? The biggest threat to the environment via natural corks is when they end up in landfills

*It takes the Cork Oak Tree about 25 years before the cork can be harvested from it. After that cork can be harvested from the tree every 9 years, but only cork from the very first harvest of a tree is suitable for wine corks. Cork is harvested by hand without killing the trees - like shearing a sheep - The industry keeps the trees from being cut down.

* Cork forests are a vital source of income for thousands of family farmers, who for generations have worked these forests. These forests absorb millions of tons of CO2 each year and are a vast provider of oxygen to our planet. The forests also provide the greatest defense against the desertification of this region. The cork forests are one of the most sustainable and environmentally harvested forests in the world.

*The Mediterranean cork forests are also high in biodiversity. Glossy black storks will nest only in cork oaks, and the trees provide homes for similarly selective booted eagles. Thousands of European cranes arrive in winter to feed on the abundance of acorns.

*There are 100 different species of bird, including nightjars, short-toed eagles, azure-winged magpies, bee-eaters, black-shouldered kites and hoopoes. There are also bats and other small mammals, reptiles and amphibians in the forests.

* And the mosaic of cork groves, grassland and scrub provides the perfect habitat for the magnificent Iberian lynx, the world's rarest big cat (Only around 100 are thought to remain and the species is on the brink of extinction) the Iberian Imperial eagle and Barbary deer.
