Treasures of the Egyptians
Deceptively simple, this necklace combines elegance with originality in a harmonious blend. The lapis beads are graduated in size from 12mm at the front down to 3mm nearest to the sterling hook and eye clasp. Silver Bali-style beads in 3 different styles add accent and shine periodically along the length of the strand, and each lapis bead is separated from the next by a tiny round sterling silver spacer. The cartouche - a set of hieroglyphics set apart from the main body of a text by encircling them in a border - usually represented a proper name. I have NO idea who or what this one represents, but it is distinctive, intricate, and is beautifully set off by the dark blue of the stones. Many of the lapis beads contain tiny gold flecks of pyrite, enhancing their beauty and contrast with the silver in the rest of the strand. Polished lapis was often used in jewellery in ancient Egypt, and can be found in many museum collections. This piece was meant to evoke that aura of history and antiquity in a modern setting.
