This new book from Arcadia / The History Press follows the roots and cycles of alcohol prohibition in Atlanta, beginning with General Oglethorpe's ban of rum when Georgia was first settled as a colony. Local prohibition activities and effects are discussed in the context of the national prohibition movement, and we include the most recent changes in law. As authors, our goal has been to make a difficult and messy subject as approachable as possible.
1. From Frontier Frenzy to Semi-Domesticated Drinking
2. Temperance in Georgia, 1735-1884
3. The Battle for Fulton County
4. From Wet Atlanta to Dry Georgia
5. The Effects of State Prohibition
6. Georgia Tightens the Lid on Alcohol
7. Income Tax, the Kaiser and National Prohibition
8. Tiger Kings, White Lightning and the Dixie Highway
9. Society Demands Repeal
10. Prohibition's Legacy
A comprehensive bibliography and index are included in the book. Makes a great gift for those who love spirits and history.
Early review of our book:
"Ron and Mary deliver an exceptionally well researched narrative of the time, capturing the sociocultural dynamics, resilience of enterprise, legal struggles, and consequences of Prohibition in this 'sessionable' must read!"
