Unakite and padparadscha colored crystals are brought together in these meaningful dangle earrings that feature Tibetan handpainted Om round bone beads. The "Om" symbol is part of the mantra "Om mani padme hum," which is represented by the other symbols that were painted around the beads. This mantra translates into "Jewel in the Heart of the Lotus," and informed my choices for the unakite and crystals of this piece.

The Om mantra beads are ox bone, and altho they look batiked, they are handpainted. Pretty sterling silver daisy spacers border them, with a unakite round (4mm) at the top. Below each main bead is a beading-wire strung loop of more unakite, padparadscha Swarovski crystal bicones (4mm), and little sterling beads (2mm). The unakite is more of a densely colored stone, with pinkish areas and dark to light green, whereas the crystals are sparkly bright and the sterling beads beautifully light-catching despite their size.

This beading loop is secured with sterling crimp beads, hidden inside the main Om beads.

The padparadscha crystals are a pinkish orange, their color based on the rare sapphire of the same name. Padparadscha is derived from the Sanskrit term "padma raga," which means "hue similar to the lotus flower." Crystals of this color thus seemed perfect not only in color for this pair of earrings, but in meaning. The unakite gemstone is associated with unity (something rather evident in its name), and that, along with its coloration, struck me as just right for this pair!

The earring hooks are French style and sterling silver, with the sterling mark on the rear of the hooks. They come with clear earnuts, also known as ear stoppers, to help keep the earrings securely on one's ears.

Lengthwise, these measure about 2 1/4 inches including hooks. See my photos for a ruler measurement.

This is a lovely pair of Tibetan Om bead earrings with an ethnic look that has spiritual meaning and has been carefully handmade.

Inspiration/Story Behind This Product

I bought these beads at a Dharma shop in Newport, RI, which claims to have authentic Tibetan-made goods. I loved the idea of having a mantra on beads, although I am not sure how the entire mantra was fit on these beads and am trusting my source! The "Om" is very clear, though, and I wired the earrings so that this element should stay forward in view unless intentionally pushed around on its pin. It was a wonderfully peaceful experience making these earrings, and I consider them quite special.
