Antique 1920s Ceiling Mount Light Fixture Art Nouveau round steelcast

Details

A beautiful Art-Nouveau round bare bulb flush mount light fixture made by Lightolier, one of the oldest lighting companies in America. Its stylish copper colored leaf details in the outer ring and the inside ring are in very good condition. It is all original paint and has the original cords. It is estimated to be from the late 1920's, possibly the early 1930's.

It was removed from our former Victorian home in the first natural gas-lit town in the US. The house, built in the late 18th century, fitted with the original gas lighting and was later updated to showcase electric bulbs, when fads changed to reflect personal wealth of the family by showing off the fact that they had electric lighting.

This light fixture measures 7 1/2 inches in diameter and approximately 2 3/4 inches tall. It requires 3 screws to secure to the ceiling, not included.

There is some patina to the inside of the fixture due to its age. It was in working condition when it was removed from the Victorian house, where it was used up until 2004. It is suggested an electrician update the cords however, as they are the original cords to the light.

The 'After Sunset Lightolier sticker is still on the inside, and it is numbered- number 02764D.

History of Lightolier
In the early 1900´s, lighting was mostly produced by gas. While Thomas Edison pioneered the light bulb 25 years earlier, it was not yet popularized, nor were electric lighting products widely available. Lightolier helped to change that.

Originally named the New York Gas and Appliance Company, the company first distributed both gas and electric fixtures, which were mostly sold as component kits. The company quickly distinguished itself by styling and manufacturing its own designs. An early success was the addition of tasseled fringes to fixture shades. The name Lightolier, adopted in 1919, combined "light" with "chandelier." and signaled the company´s transformation into a forward-looking business.

From the outset, Lightolier was an innovative marketer. Its early advertising efforts linked good lighting with good living. "After Sunset, Lightolier," was a memorable slogan, reflecting the fact that early electric lighting was mostly used at night. A 1925 sales brochure, entitled The Charm of a Light Conditioned Home , educated consumers about the value of good lighting, subtly underscoring the benefits of Lightolier fixtures. By the 1920s, Lightolier was already a well-known brand and recognized for its leadership.
