HIGH DESERT SONGS is a glorious handmade gemstone necklace designed with a Thai triangle pendant, mookaite jasper, garnet and sterling silver. I emanates the colors of the desert from sandy yellow tans through mauves and maroons. Carefully handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs, this stunning piece of one of a kind (OOAK) jewelry is a true desert inspiration!
The focal piece of HIGH DESERT SONGS is a lovely, rustic-looking Karen Hill Tribes handmade fine silver pendant in made in a unique triangular shape. Stamped onto the pendant are wee little flowers - such a nice touch! The flowers remind me of the blooms that appear in the spring-time in the desert, usually small and short-lived but beautiful nonetheless. The silversmiths of Karen Hill Tribe are known for their intricate detailing in their fine silver workmanship - and this small pendant is no exception! Please take a good look at the close-up photos and you will see what I mean! I love using Thai Hill Tribes fine silver pieces for their intricate workmanship and one of a kind uniqueness! To highlight the Thai pendant, I chose desert-colored mookaite jasper tubes. Such a wide range of amazing colors that you would expect as the sun plays across the landscape. And if you look closely at many of the tubes, you will see curves and swirls - nature's art! An interesting fact about mookaite jasper is that it is only found in one place in the world, in a desert area of Australia!
To bring out the darker purple and maroons in the mookaite jasper, I chose to include three deep purplish-red garnet small nuggets between each tube. When the light hits these garnet pieces, they absolutely glow. The nuggets are a perfect match to the mookaite jasper tubes. Separating the garnet from the jasper are sterling silver 2mm beads.
To finish HIGH DESERT SONGS, the main body of the necklace is crimped to a sterling silver lobster clasp and sterling silver jump ring.
***Thai Hill Tribe fine silver is made by the Karen Hill Tribe high in the mountains of Thailand using traditional techniques. Because they live so close to nature, a majority of Hill Tribe designs are nature-inspired or symbolic designs. Fine silver has a higher silver content than sterling silver - it can be up to 99% pure as opposed to sterling silver which is 92.5% pure silver. Because of the higher silver content, fine silver has a beautiful "old" glow to it and does not tarnish as quickly as sterling silver can.
Mookaite jasper is believed to help with finishing anything that must end in order to make way for something new. The gemstone helps to focus the mind when trying to complete a task. Additionally it is believed to be a healing stone that promotes energy & new ideas. Red garnet is worn close to the body to bring peaceful energy and symbolizes faith, courage, truth and compassion. It has been a symbol of passionate love and fidelity for many centuries.
