Are you looking for a pair of ethnic inspired handmade earrings that are a bit different but possess a maximum amount of fun? You have found them here, with the DIAMONDS AND CROSSES one of a kind (OOAK) earrings! This fun, wire-wrapped pair of earrings was created with two carved bone spacer beads in a diamond and cross design, red garnet and copper. When wearing these beauties, you will definitely be noticed for your boho style and good taste. Carefully handcrafted by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs, they are a perfect pair to add to your eclectic jewelry collection!
The highlight of the DIAMONDS AND CROSSES are the stunning 3-hole spacer beads. They were hand carved in India from either water buffalo or camel bone and then dyed a rich, warm brown color. As you can see in the photographs, the carved areas soaked up more dye than the uncarved areas, lending great detail to the spacers. The backside of the beads have a smooth finish. Since the spacers were carved by hand, you can see that there are some differences in the beads, that they are not exactly the same - but that is what I adore about handmade! Viva la difference! Because of the finish, the bone beads have an an antique look to them. If you take a close look at photo #5, a side view, you can see the three holes that were drilled through the spacer beads. I made good use of those holes by weaving copper wire in and out and running the wire along the outer edge, along the top and bottom, to mimic a picture frame. Because of the antique-looking nature of the beads, I decided to wire wrap the beads in a rustic style with loops at the top and the bottom. These beautiful bone spacers were purchased from WorldsEdgeBeads right here on ArtFire (www.worldsedgebeads.artfire.com)
To add dangle goodness to the DIAMONDS AND CROSSES earrings, I decided to add a garnet cluster to the bottom of the bone spacers. The garnet is a rich red color with more than a hint of purple. The garnet rounds positively glow when the earrings are backlit! Two of the five garnet dangles on each earring are a longer length, using 2 garnet rounds separated by 2mm copper beads. The other three dangles consist of a single garnet round framed on the top and bottom with 2mm copper beads. The garnet rounds were strung on handmade (by me) copper headpins with a small hand hammered loop at the bottom. Each garnet dangle was wire wrapped in a rustic manner to the copper loop that was created at the bottom of the spacer. The dangles are in constant movement when the earrings are worn - almost mesmerizing!
To finish the earrings, sterling silver French hook earwires were connected to the copper loop created at the top of the bone spacer beads. To tie the two metals together, a 3mm copper bead was added to both earwires.
For a better understanding of the relative size of the DIAMOND AND CROSSES earrings, please be sure to check out photo #7 for a size comparison with a dime.
