If you or someone you love has a passion for beautiful butterflies, then this handmade dichroic glass and gemstone necklace is perfect! The SPARKLING FLUTTERBIES necklace was carefully designed and created by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs with a handmade butterfly dichroic glass pendant, Swarovski crystal clusters, black onyx and sterling silver. It is a striking, one of a kind (OOAK) necklace, full of awesome, eye-catching glow and sparkle. Created for the woman who loves unique beaded jewelry, you will want to wear the SPARKLING FLUTTERBIES necklace time and time again to show your exquisite good taste!
The photos certainly don't do the pendant used in the SPARKLING FLUTTERBIES necklace justice. Because it was made with dichroic glass, each movement and each new angle will show different colors, some sublime, some bright. Sometimes it almost looks as if the butterflies are actually moving! The pendant was made by artist friend Rose of Desert_Jewels (www.desert_jewels.artfire.com) right here in the Borderlands. It was created with two layers of glass. The first layer is a shiny, jet black base glass. Then a layer of etched butterfly rainbow dichroic glass was placed on top of the black.
The pendant-to-be was then carefully placed in a kiln and fired to a temperature of 1450 degrees. At that temperature, the two layers fused together. After the kiln hit the desired heat, it was allowed to slowly cool so any glass in the kiln was annealed (hardened). Since a cap glass was not used, when you run your finger over the top of the pendant, you can feel slight texture from the butterflies. To connect the pendant to the necklace, a sleek sterling silver bail was glued to the back of the glass. The glue is industrial strength so the pendant will not fall off. ***To find out more information about dichroic glass, please scroll down to the bottom of the listing.
Because the black base glass of the pendant is so shiny, I decided to complement the glass with glossy black onyx rounds. In fact because they have such a high gloss finish, they are very reflective. If you look at the close-up photo #5, you will notice that my silhouette is reflected in each gemstone! Sterling silver 2 mm beads separate each onyx bead in the front of the necklace, then every grouping of five at the back of the necklace.
To add a more than a touch of pizzazz to the necklace, I decided to add a Swarovski crystal cluster to each side of the necklace, after the fifth black onyx bead. Each 4 mm Swarovski crystal was individually wire wrapped on a sterling silver headpin with a ball at the end. Eighteen total crystals were used, 9 on each side. The two colors I chose to complement the major colors in the butterfly pendant are "indicolite" (the aqua crystal) and "tanzanite" (the lavender crystal). Six indicolite and three tanzanite crystals were used on each side. And, boy, do they ever sparkle!!!
To finish the SPARKLING FLUTTERBIES necklace, a lovely twisted sterling silver toggle clasp was chosen. It was connected to sterling silver wire protectors and was then crimped to the necklace with sterling crimp tubes. A sterling crimp cover was placed over the crimp tube to mimic a 3 mm silver bead.
For a better understanding of the relative size of the pendant and black onyx used in the SPARKLING FLUTTERBIES necklace, please be sure to check out photo #7 for a size comparison with a quarter.

Even though manmade, glass and crystal carries the energies of transformation, rebirth and communication. Black Onyx is believed to be a powerful protective stone and is used as a defense against negative thinking; it brings balance to mind and body and helps the wearer approach a task with greater self confidence. Silver is a metal of love and healing; it is a mirror to the soul, helping us to see ourselves as others see us.
The SPARKLING FLUTTERBIES necklace will come with two informational drop tags: one with the piece's name; the other lists the materials used in the necklace and the language of the stones and metals. It will be carefully packed in an organza jewelry bag, perfect for gift giving to a loved one . . . or to yourself!
***"What is dichroic glass"? Dichroic glass (pronounced dye-crow-ick) is a type of glass that has amazing multi-colored, reflective properties, especially when viewed at different angles. Extreme color shifts can often be seen. NASA originally developed dichroic glass for use in satellite mirrors and it was also used on re-entry tiles of the Space Shuttles. Sheets of glass have a special coating applied to it that involves vaporizing various metal oxides into a fine dust with an electro-gun. The oxide dust settles on and coats hot glass inside an airless vacuum chamber. Needless to say, because of of the complex, expensive procedure, only a handful of companies produce dichroic glass for artists to use for their designs.
***Please be aware that not all computer monitors show colors exactly the same. The colors of the stones are extremely close to the actual color on my monitor. They may appear lighter or darker on yours.
