Om Ceramic Pendant Necklace Handmade Pearls Spiritual Jewelry Aum OOAK
Having been chanted by yogis of many religions for thousands of years, the word "om" is sometimes defined as "the sound of the universe" and is most often associated with the mantra "om mani padme hum", meaning "jewel in the heart of the lotus". I love that and use unique om pendants in my jewelry designs whenever I can. Simply named after the symbol on the pendant, the OM necklace was lovingly created with a handmade stoneware om symbol pendant, peach colored freshwater pearls and sterling silver. It's a simple design to honor the spiritual meaning of the word. Carefully handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs, it is a one of a kind (OOAK) design for use to center the mind during meditation, during yoga or other times you feel the need of peacefulness in your life.
+ Om pendant: app. 28 mm x 4 mm
+ Freshwater pearls: app. 12 mm x 10 mm
+ Metal: sterling silver
+ Clasp: sterling silver s-clasp set
+ Length: app. 17.75" / 45.1 cm
+ Pendant drop: app. 1.75 " / 4.4 cm
To start off with, what is "om"? It is not a word that is easily defined since it is rich in meaning and depth. The concept of trinities can be found in most religions; Hinduism, where om was born, is no exception. Om is made up of three syllables: A, U, M - Aum. Religious experts believe these three symbols represent, among others: the heavens, earth and underworld; the Hindu gods Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva (creator god, sustainer god and destroyer god); mind, body, spirit; the waking, dreaming and dreamless states; and sound of divinity in all things in the past, present and the future.
The gorgeous stoneware ceramic pendant used in the OM necklace was handmade by Christine of Beadfreaky (https://www.etsy.com/shop/beadfreaky). She designs and hand carves the press molds she used for each of her unique, rustic designs, the om pendant included. A thin orange glaze complements the symbol perfectly, pooling in the lower areas for more depth of color, leaving the raised sections lighter in color. The back of the pendant was left smooth and unglazed. The pendant was then high-fired in a kiln to give it strength and durability and make it waterproof. Even though the pendant is durable, it can chip or break if hit or dropped on a hard surface. I wire wrapped a pendant bail using sterling silver wire which includes a peach colored freshwater pearl.
Because for centuries many people believe pearls spread loving vibrations and promote sincerity, truth and loyalty, I thought the use of pearls was a perfect choice to pair with the om pendant. As you can see in the photos above, the pearls have a lustrous glow and are a light - medium peach color, lovely complement to the colors of the pendant. Since the pearls are freshwater, they are not perfectly round but are oblong, some with small protrusions and flat spots (please see photo #8). In no way does this devalue the beauty of the pearls. I grouped the pearls in the following order from the pendant: 3 pearls and a sterling silver 2 mm bead, 2 pearls and a sterling bead, 1 pearl and a sterling bead, 2 pearls and then 3 pearls separated by a sterling bead. Then the pattern starts over again all the way to the back of the necklace.
To finish the handmade OM necklace, I chose a sterling silver s-clasp set. The s-clasp itself has a swirled, textured design to it (see photo #9); the two sterling closed rings are smooth. The s-clasp set was connected to the body of the necklace with sterling silver wire protectors and then crimped with sterling crimp tubes. A sterling silver crimp cover was placed over each crimp to mimic 3 mm silver beads for a professional finish to the necklace.
For a better understanding of the relative size of the OM pendant necklace with pearls, please be sure to check out photo #6 for a size comparison with a quarter.
Pearls are used to spread loving vibrations; they promote sincerity, truth and loyalty. Silver is a metal of love and healing; it is a mirror to the soul, helping us to see ourselves as others see us.
The OM necklace will come with two informational drop tags: one with the piece's name; the other lists the materials used in the necklace and the language of the stones and metals. It will be carefully packed in an organza jewelry bag, perfect for gift giving to a loved one . . . or to yourself!
