Sterling silver teardrop earring with bars
With their clean lines, these earrings can be something you wear to the market or out to dinner. The bars sway with your movements.
How they are made:
These start as 16 gauge sterling silver wire. The teardrop shape is made on a mandrel, the top filed flat and then a handmade jump ring is soldered to the top. After this, the bottom half of the teardrop is forged (hammered) and then holes drilled for the bars.
The bars are made out of 20 gauge sterling silver wire that is heated to form the molten balls on the end.
Next, the ear wire is fabricated. This starts with a piece of 20 gauge wire usually about 2" long. The wire is heated red hot on one end just until a molten ball forms on the end, then it is quenched in water and pickled.
The circle is formed with round nosed pliers and then the shaping of it is done on a mandrel. The end of the wire is smoothed using a cup bur so there are no sharp edges and then the end of the wire is given a small bend.
Then the teardrop is soldered on and then the earring is tumbled to 'work harden' it and give it its final finish.
The overall length of the earring from the top of the jump ring to the bottom of the bars is approximately 2 inches.
From the top of the jump ring to the bottom of the teardrop is approximately 1 ½ inches.
At the widest part of the teardrop, it is approximately 7/8 inches across.
