Pot Marigold make fantastic cut flowers and attract bees, birds, and butterflies. They also help keep pests away from your garden, so they often found planted around the perimeter of vegetable gardens. This Fancy Mix has the largest variety of Marigold species I have ever seen combined!

Calendula seed produces an annual or short-lived herbaceous perennial that grows from 16 - 24 inches tall. Calendula flowers are daisy-like and come in colors of orange or yellow with single or double rows of petals. It is easy to grow Calendula Officinalis from flower seed, and it makes a great addition to any garden, offering both flowers and foliage that are edible. The plant has terrific pest-fighting abilities as well. Calendula flowers attract good bugs into the garden and help repel the less desirous bugs. , Calendula grows quickly from flower seed, blooms heavily, and then dies with the first heavy frost.
Sow Pot Marigold seeds in cell packs, press into soil and lightly cover. Kept at 70F, germination averages 7 - 14 days. Or direct sow Calendula flower seed into prepared seed beds after all danger of frost has passed in the spring. Lightly cover the flower seeds with peat moss, and sow 6 seeds per foot. Thin to 8 - 12 inches apart. Calendula prefers full sun, moderate water, and almost any soil with good drainage will work. Calendula flowers are long-lasting cut, and they attract bees and butterflies. Pot Marigolds perform the best in cool weather, and they can grow fall-spring in mild winter areas

Step 1
Prepare the seed tray by filling the planting cells with a sterile planting medium. Any good potting soil will work for this stage of the growing process. You can use a flower pot or planter instead of the seed tray if you prefer. Simply fill the pot three-quarters full of the potting soil.

Step 2
Plant the marigold seeds about 1/8 inch deep. Cover with a light covering of soil. Planting the seeds any more shallow will not let the roots establish a deep root system. Planting too deep might keep the seeds from germinating.

Step 3
Water the seeded area thoroughly. Do not soak the soil but do make sure it is saturated so the soil feels damp.

Step 4
Cover the seed tray or pot with plastic. An easy way to cover the planter or pot is to place the entire container inside a plastic food storage bag. Secure the plastic or storage bag securely with tape or rubber bands.

Step 5
Place the planted seeds under a grow light or in a sunny, southern window. Marigold seeds germinate in five to 14 days depending upon soil conditions and temperature. Germination occurs more quickly with warmer temperatures.

Step 6
Remove the plastic once most of the seeds have sprouted two leaves. Check the soil to ensure it is still moist. Spray with the water bottle if the soil is dry. Pouring water on new seedlings can damage new root systems.

The trick is in planting seeds this time of year is to sow them directly into the ground, containers, and raised beds. You'll have to ensure the soil doesn't dry out and kill any sprouting seeds.
