VINTAGE IVORY NETSUKE - Woman with Parasol 25.2 grams pkg1 1984 CBN281

Details

Vintage Pre Ban ivory exquisitely hand carved netsuke which is artist signed and that we purchased in Hong Kong in 1984. The style of this netsuke is katabori or figural.

This netsuke is of a woman holidng a folded parasol in one hand and a basket in the other. There are two holes on his back ( seen in one of the photos) for stringing purposes.A floral motif has been colored in dark green and appears on the front of her kimono and wraps around to the back.

Price is for this one piece and includes insurance within the U.S. It measures approximately 2" tall and weighs 25.2 grams.

Netsuke are miniature carved works of art that first appeared in 17th-century Japan to serve a practical function (the two Japanese characters ne+tsuke mean "root" and "to attach"). Traditional Japanese robes or kimonos had no pockets. Men who wore them needed a place to store their personal belongings -the solution was to place such objects in containers hung by cords from the robes' sashes. The most popular containers were beautifully crafted boxes (inro), which were held shut by ojimes, which were sliding beads on cords. The fastener or toggle that secured the cord at the top of the sash was a carved, button-like toggle called a netsuke.
Netsuke, like the inro and ojime, evolved over time from being strictly utilitarian into objects of great artistic merit and an expression of extraordinary craftsmanship. Such objects have a long history reflecting the important aspects of Japanese folklore and life. Netsuke production was most popular during the Edo period in Japan, around 1615-1868.

*****************************************************
"In 1989, the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora
( CITES ) banned the international trade in African elephant ivory. Such trade in Asian elephant ivory has been banned by CITES since 1975."
This quotation is from a report released by the Humane Society of the United States in October of 2002.

Many people sell ivory today and many state that it is
" pre ban" ivory. I feel as a seller on ArtFire , that it is my responsibility to let you know exactly what " pre ban ivory" means and also to assure you that any ivory beads I sell in my shop, were purchased before this ban. We have the documentation to prove this.

**PLEASE NOTE:
CITES banned the sale of ASIAN elephant ivory as early as 1975. Despite the fact that it was legal to trade in AFRICAN ivory until 1989 ( and our items were purchased in 1984 ) Customs officials seem to be currently prohibiting entry of ALL ivory products regardless of origin unless accompanied by an export license which validates acquisition prior to 1973. We regret that we cannot ship outside the U.S. for this reason***

IMPORTANT NOTICE: POSTAGE RATES HAVE RISEN DRAMATICALLY IN 2016
ORDERS INSIDE USA: A charge of $3.60 covers any first class shipment up to 8 ounces. Our beads vary so much in weight that it is impossible for us to apply a single add-on charge for multiple product orders. We will continue to refund to customers any amount that greatly exceeds our actual cost of shipping and handling.
ORDERS OUTSIDE USA: International First Class rates are now crazy: $13.50 for any package weighing from 1-8 ounces. Even an order for 2-3 small bead items may cost $13.50 or more, depending on the type of material (stone versus resin, for example). Please bear with us for a few weeks while we change our listings to account for the new rates. We apologize in advance if we have to adjust the postage cost of an order that has been placed. We will understand if an order is rescinded when the postage cost is too high relative to the product value.

All international orders have contents described as "loose beads" and are flagged as "commercial samples" or " gift" if you prefer to make your life easier when receiving your beads. If you'd like us to mark your order as " gift" instead please let us know!

All our beads are inspected one by one before being shipped. They are individually wrapped to protect them and then put in little plastic ziploc bags.

All vintage beaded jewelry is either shipped in a little gift box tied with a ribbon or in a vintage Chinese embroidered silk purse.

If you ever have a problem with a damaged bead or jewelry, don't hesitate to contact us. We are only human, and with so many orders going out on a daily basis, there is always room for error. We will replace your order (assuming we have more in stock), issue you a store credit, or give you a full refund if the item is returned in the same condition as it was shipped within 7 days of receiving your order if you are not fully satisfied. You must notify us as soon as you receive your order if there is a problem.
We want you to be 100% thrilled with your purchases!

We value each and every customer and are delighted that you have chosen to shop in our store! Customer relations are extremely important to us and we pride ourselves on the authenticity of what we sell, how we package it, and being accessible to all of you should a question or a problem ever arise.

Thank you - Debby and Joel Arem

When I thought that I had ordered two of these and then checked out I had to order another set. The seller was very kind and combined my two orders and refunded my shipping.
