This listing is for a vintage, cotton, hand quilted using Kantha embroidery quilt throw bedspread or picnic blanket as shown in pictures. This is a finely quilted throw lovingly made years ago for gifting on special occasions. I have repaired all holes and tried my best to restore it. Each kantha throw is one of a kind, no two are alike. Fully reversible. The bed used in pictures is a queen size bed with pillow top mattress. Last two pictures show the reverse side of the quilt.
MATERIAL: 100% pure cotton.
Exact Dimensions: 56 inches width x 77 inches length
First side - beige-yellow saree with blue hand woven motifs, white and red needlework (hand embroidered) geometric motifs on top of fine hand quilting.
Second side - patchwork made from solid purple and blue plaid cotton fabric on reverse side. Color and print combination make it a soothing, unisex quilt.
Weight of the quilt: ~3 lbs
Care : Gentle machine wash in cold water, hang dry in shade OR dry clean. This will not shrink or bleed color if care instructions are followed.
Process of Creation: layers of vintage cotton sarees (Indian wrap around skirts) are hand quilted together using Kantha stitch. To make this throw more special than daily use kantha quilts, extremely fine quilting was done to the quilt. Geometric, needlework patterns done on top of quilting.
Items have been stored in a smoke-free home and although I love pets, I don't have one.
*****More information about the provenance/story of this item ********
This kantha quilt was originally part of the my own wedding trousseau trunk or of a family member or someone from my village, decades ago. Hand crafted by the mother of the bride with great attention to detail. Due to age, use and at times neglect, some of them had holes, stains and frayed edges. I did my best to restore it to its original state by repairing holes, using kantha hand quilting stitches. Big stains (if present) were also covered up with clean
fabric patches using hand quilting. Then my daughter and I washed the smaller stains out and repaired the frayed edges, as much as possible. All of this and restoration work was done with my own hands using cotton threads, cotton fabric patches and needle.
