I was wishing I was at the beach and thinking of emerald green waters when I created this fused glass plate. Stripes of transparent glass in emerald green, spring green, light green tint and an iridized greenish gold glass provide a fun, beachy vibe. The stripe of iridized glass has a metallic like sheen that provides a nice contrast to the other stripes in this dish. This plate is a rectangle shape measuring approximately 7.5 x 5 inches which makes it a nice size to use in displaying those pretty guest soaps or add a nicely scented pillar candle for another display or gift idea.
This item was made by precisely cutting strips of glass and then fusing them together in a kiln to approximately 1500 degrees. The edges are then smoothed to a straight finish with a diamond bit grinder and placed back into the kiln to "fire polish" the edges. The final step places the piece over a mold which goes back into the kiln for a third firing to give it the shape of the plate.
If you aren't familiar with fused glass, the small bubbles that you see in the glass occur frequently as the glass fuses together. This is not considered a defect and I think adds to the beauty and appeal of fused glass. For this piece, I think the bubbles add to that beachy ocean feel.
All of my items are handmade in my Roswell, Georgia, USA studio.
