This stunning necklace is a combination of broad collar and bib necklace styles, woven entirely in jet black with bright gold pearl accents.

I used a simple variation of the netting technique to create the collar base, with shiny black glass seed beads. The bib section is made up of wide, freeform netting, with tiny crystal pearls throughout. The bright gold contrasts beautifully against the simple black necklace. I have finished the collar with a simple beaded toggle and loop clasp.

Dimensions: The collar is 1.1 cm (0.4 inches) wide, and 46 cm (18.1 inches) long. When the clasp is secured, the collar has an inside circumference of about 41 cm (16.1 inches). The bib section is 11 cm (4.3 inches) wide, and 3 cm (1.2 inches) long at the center.

To create this necklace, I used high quality Japanese glass seed beads, and imitation pearls by Swarovski Elements - the foremost crystal manufacturers in the world. The necklace is woven with durable fused nylon thread. The netting is strong, but has a wonderful soft drape.

The delicate collar base makes this necklace lightweight and comfortable. You can wear it any time of the year, with a variety of clothing styles, though it would look best with open neck tops or dresses. The elegant palette makes it ideal for holiday affairs, and the simple design is suitable for any occasion.

Inspiration/Story Behind This Product

The bold contrast of black and gold is one of my favorite Egyptian palettes. It is often seen in funerary sculpture, particularly depictions of Anubis, the jackal god and protector of the dead. Black and gold were also important colors in Egyptian spirituality.

Gold was considered the flesh of the gods, and the earthly embodiment of the sun. Black represented the fertile silt that was deposited each year by the Nile, which allowed the Egyptians to grow crops and flourish in the unforgiving desert.
